CORRECTION 3/22: IGN has issued a correction to its original article, clarifying that Shimomura meant that she is working on "various tracks for several different games" as opposed to "several songs for Kingdom Hearts 4."

Original story follows.

It's been confirmed that Yoko Shimomura is actively working on the soundtrack for Kingdom Hearts 4, which is the first official update the highly-anticipated action-RPG from Square Enix has received in over a year. Kingdom Hearts 4 was first announced in 2022 with a stunning trailer that has left many fans excited to see where Sora's adventures take him next. Unfortunately, information on the game has been hard to come by ever since the trailer was dropped.

While the Kingdom Hearts 4 social media channels recently acknowledged the release of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, the game has otherwise been completely dark. The last time there was any major update about it was March 2023 when it was teased that something had happened behind-the-scenes that influenced the franchise's direction. This tease was never given any additional context, but now fans have another update about the long-awaited game to consider.

With a new Nintendo console rumored to be in the works, and Kingdom Hearts 4 in development, a partnership could be mutually beneficial.

In a recent interview with IGN, Yoko Shimomura confirmed that she is working on Kingdom Hearts 4. Shimomura revealed that she is working on "a number of songs at the moment," but that's all the information that she was able to share about the highly-anticipated game. Kingdom Hearts fans anxious to learn more about the game may not be disappointed that this is the only update they've gotten about it in over a year, but on the other hand, it's reassuring to know that the game's soundtrack is being put together, and by someone who has been with the franchise since the very beginning.

For those unfamiliar with her work, Shimomura is a composer that worked on the very first Kingdom Hearts game that was released back in 2002. Since then, Shimomura has contributed to nearly every other Kingdom Hearts game, including 2019's Kingdom Hearts 3. Shimomura's work on Kingdom Hearts has often been praised, and so fans can likely count on the soundtrack for Kingdom Hearts 4 being one of the game's high points.

So far, fans know very little about what Kingdom Hearts 4 is bringing to the table. It's been confirmed that the game will feature the world of Verum Rex, which is a video game-within-a-video-game, and it will also feature the new Build command. Kingdom Hearts fans will have to wait for more concrete details about what else the new game will entail, but hopefully, more information will come to light sooner rather than later.
