A theory for Phase 5 proposes that Deadpool and Wolverine could emerge as ideal candidates to unite a fresh team of multiversal Avengers in the MCU.

While speaking in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Feige responded to a question about the upcoming X-Men movie. Although he didn't give many details about the project, the Marvel chief teased how the production giant will introduce the mutants in the present timeline. When asked about the reported X-Men film, Feige said, "July 26 is really when it all starts, when Deadpool & Wolverine comes out." For many, this response can be seen as straightforward to a question that Feige didn't want to answer. However, for those who know about Deadpool & Wolverine and how it's going to change the MCU, this response might mean something more than just a simple statement. It has been widely reported that the film is going to feature characters that have been a part of Marvel since the very beginning.

Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman in Deadpool & Wolverine

Marvel introduced mutants in The Marvels. In the post-credits scene of The Marvels, Monica wakes up at Charles Xavier's school and encounters Beast, played by Kelsey Grammer. The actor's recent appearance in the aforementioned film has already sparked excitement among fans, fueling hopes that other original X-Men stars might also join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And it seems Deadpool & Wolverine might be the perfect opportunity for the mutants to arrive in the MCU. Although it's still unclear if the cast members of the original X-Men trilogy will make an appearance in the MCU, the franchise will undoubtedly have an advantage if they do, because they will draw in fans who grew up with the original trilogy. Introducing these characters helps expand the MCU's narrative scope, offering new possibilities for crossover events and collaborative story arcs with existing Marvel heroes.

Deadpool & Wolverine is the only Marvel movie to release this year and without any guesses, a lot rides on its success. Phase 5 didn't perform as Marvel would have hoped it to and didn't yield favorable results. However, the production giant might be hoping to attain a lot of success with the upcoming superhero flick. As per reports, the movie is already projected to earn more than $200 million in its opening weekend. If it does achieve that, the third film in the Deadpool franchise will have a record-breaking opening. The first Deadpool film earned $132.4 million domestically in its opening weekend and it is still a record for a R-rated film. If current projections turn out to be right, Deadpool & Wolverine might just take the numero uno position on that list.

Deadpool & Wolverine is scheduled to release in theaters on July 26.
