In Kena: Bridge of Spirits, players can choose the experience they wish to have. There are four difficulties so that those of all skill levels can play, and of these levels can be chosen at the beginning of the game except for one: the Master Spirit Guide.

When players start up Kena: Bridge of Spirits, they will be able to choose one of three difficulty levels, with the forth being grayed out. These four difficulty levels are:

  • Story Mode: The enemies and bosses like Kappa in Kena are less aggressive. Rot's abilities recharge constantly and when Kena takes damage from enemies.
  • Spirit Guide: In this normal mode, enemies are slightly more aggressive. Rot's combat abilities also recover only when Kena takes damage.
  • Expert Spirit Guide: This is Kena's hard mode. The enemies will be incredibly aggressive, deal a lot more damage, and Kena's Rot abilities will recharge when she deals damage to opponents.
  • Master Spirit Guide: This is the most difficult combat level. When players select Master Spirit Guide, some enemies will one-shot Kena. Enemies will have more health. This level of difficulty is only recommended for those who enjoy very hard combat situations and are comfortable with the controls.

Since the Master difficulty level is so extreme, Ember Lab decided to lock it up. But players can unlock this hard-as-nails mode.

How to Unlock Master Spirit Guide Mode in Kena: Bridge of Spirits

Master Mode is unlocked when players complete the game. It doesn't matter what difficulty level a player completes their first pass with, Master mode will unlock with completed Story Mode, Spirit Guide, or Expert Spirit Guide. Playing through the game on Master mode will give players a special Master Spirit Guide mode Kena trophy for their PlayStation trophy collection.

How to Get the Master Trophy Without Playing the Master Mode

There is currently a glitch in Kena: Bridge of Spirits where players can get the Master Spirit Guide Mode trophy without completing Master mode on PS5. It is not clear if this works on PS4 or PC. In order to do it, players who are running version 1.04 need to follow these steps:

  • Open a completed game file on any difficulty.
  • Stand on the mediation spot on the Mountain Shrine.
  • Save manually in a new slot.
  • Press Triangle to end the game and sit in the meditation spot.
  • Skip the credit scenes with X.
  • Start a new game on Master Spirit Guide Mode.
  • Watch the opening cutscene.
  • As soon as the prompt for the main character Kena to Pulse with L1 for the first time comes up, press pulse.
  • Immediately pause the game with the option button before Kena's pulse has a chance to spread out.
  • Select Load Game.
  • Load the manual save from step three.
  • Head to the meditation spot again.
  • Hit Triangle to complete the game.
  • The trophy pop up should appear.

Ultimately, this prevents players from having to complete the 8-10 hours of Kena: Bridge of Spirits on Master Mode to Platinum the game.

Kena: Bridge of Spirits is available now for PC, PS4, and PS5.
