Warning: This article contains massive spoilers for both the Jujutsu Kaisen anime and manga

In the first 5 episodes of the second season of the Jujutsu Kaisen anime, fans were introduced to the young versions of Gojo and Geto, who were the stars of a very short story arc. This little section covered the Hidden Inventory arc which was set 10 years before the start of the main story. This arc would lay the groundwork for the direction that the main narrative would take, as well as marking important developments for multiple characters.

However, in the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 movie that was released before Hidden Inventory, fans would see what they presumed to be the end of Suguru Geto, someone whose entire arc was shown from start to finish in the show and manga. He was a character that most people fell in love and empathized with after Hidden Inventory and assuming he met his end at the hands of his best friend, Geto then had his body taken over by someone we still know very little about. However, in the Shibuya Incident, it is implied that we may not have seen the end of Geto, so let's see if he can ever come back.

Geto in the Current Story

Jujutsu Kaisen - Geto's Descent

It was made evident that Geto had truly been killed by Gojo at the end of Jujutsu Kaisen 0 and the version that was roaming around ever since the beginning of season 1 of Jujutsu Kaisen was indeed an impostor. Fans referred to this imposter as 'Pseudo-Geto' and found that his plans and goals were different from those of what the original Geto wanted. The manga threw fans off a couple of times as Pseudo-Geto was initially thought to just have been the very same Special Grade sorcerer that was once a student of Jujutsu High and was best friends with Gojo.

However, towards the end of the Shibuya Incident arc, Choso confronts him and reveals his identity to be the infamous Noritoshi Kamo, a man said to be the most vile and evil sorcerer in history. Noritoshi Kamo was the one who was credited with the creation of the Cursed Womb Death Paintings, Special Grade Cursed Objects that are made by mixing curses with human beings, as well as being accused of many other diabolical crimes.

However, in the Culling Game arc, Master Tengen revealed Pseudo-Geto's identity to be someone who went by the name of Kenjaku. He is an ancient curse user whose true face and form is unknown as all that was shown was a brain with a mouth that could hop from body to body and, in doing so, would take the Cursed Techniques of each body that it inhabited. It was also revealed that Kenjaku perhaps even predates Sukuna and had been setting schemes into motion for at least 1000 years to enact his plans.

This plan officially started by imprisoning Gojo in the Prison Realm at the start of the Shibuya Incident so that he would not interfere.. After this, the Culling Game began, in which sorcerers that Kenjaku had been making deals with for 1000 years would awaken and fight one another to accumulate enough cursed energy to allow the merger of the entire population of Japan with Master Tengen, creating a single and all-powerful Cursed Spirit.

Resurrection in Jujutsu Kaisen

Geto and Gojo on a Bike

The concept of resurrection is different in Jujutsu Kaisen as compared to other media. One of the ways that it was shown for characters to come back to life was the resurrection of ancient sorcerers in the modern day during the Culling Game, where many humans of the present were fed a Cursed Object at some point in their lives by Kenjaku. This allowed for the seal on them to break when the Game started, leading to their bodies being possessed by the soul of a resurrected ancient sorcerer.

Another way that resurrection was shown to happen was with Toji during the Shibuya Incident. Granny Ogami's Cursed Technique allowed her to summon a dead person's body and mix it with someone else's soul so the person would have full control over the skills and powers of the body they inhabit. However, as she summons the body of Toji Fushiguro for her grandson to control, she finds out Toji's Heavenly Restriction led to 0 cursed energy in the vessel, allowing Toji to take back control his body for some time.

So, from what has been shown in the series thus far, resurrection either happens through the medium of a Cursed Tool or from a very specific Cursed Technique. In Geto's case, neither of these things work out in his favor as both are missing from the story to allow his resurrection that way. However, a small part of Geto may still remain in his body!

As Gojo is being imprisoned, he sees Kenjaku possessing his best friend's body. That's when he asks Geto how he could let someone take over his body and control him like that. Unbeknownst to Kenjaku, Gojo's voice seems to awaken something in Geto's vessel, making his right arm twitch and eventually try to strangle himself. Though brief, fans have taken this as a sign to mean that Geto's return is possible.

The rest, however, are just theories. One such theory is that after Gojo's defeat and death by Sukuna, Kenjaku may try to fix and inhabit Gojo's body by using Mahito's Idle Transfiguration or his own Reverse Cursed Technique to become the most powerful sorcerer in the world. Since it is known that Kenjaku retains the abilities of the sorcerers that he has inhabited before, stealing Gojo's body would work with his plan as he could still use Geto's Cursed Spirit Manipulation.

Narratively, Geto had served his purpose and even had a satisfying conclusion to his arc at the end of Jujutsu Kaisen 0. However, he was never able to get any closure due to Kenjaku stealing his body right after his death and using it to harm his best friend. If he were to ever come back, it would undoubtedly be on the side of the good guys against Kenjaku, adding a redemption arc to his overall character.

Geto, though, will probably never return as long as Kenjaku is in his body and if he does somehow give it up for a new one, Geto's body would prove useless right after and fall to the floor as nothing could control it anymore. However, Yuji is thought to have unlocked a new Cursed Technique that allows him to swap souls to other bodies, so if he manages to use this against Kenjaku, there may be a way for Geto to get his body back.

Geto's return to Jujutsu Kaisen seems unlikely to happen, but many fan theories make it seem like there is still a small possibility. Adding closure to such a beloved character is something that many fans would love to see, so if he does return, fans would embrace it with open arms. However, even if he is not brought back, then it was still great to witness and get to know such an amazing character!

Jujutsu Kaisen can be streamed on Amazon Prime and Netflix.
