Highlights

  • Suguru Geto's attack on the jujutsu society shaped the plot of Jujutsu Kaisen.
  • The original manga series, Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical School, was a prologue to Jujutsu Kaisen and featured Yuta Okkotsu as the protagonist.
  • Geto's plan to rid the world of non-sorcerers involved releasing all his cursed spirits and sacrificing his own "family" in a worst case scenario during the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons.

Suguru Geto's first plan and attack against the jujutsu society took place a year before Yuji ate Sukuna's finger. The Night Parade of a Hundred Demons shaped Jujutsu Kaisen's plot around Geto and Gojo as well as being the detonator for what later happened during the Shibuya Incident. This was the starting point for Gege Akutami's work and what led to the existence of Jujutsu Kaisen.

This franchise quickly became one of the most popular shonen series of all time, especially after the incredible success of the anime adaptation by Mappa which is now in its second season. The manga also had some traction from the beginning, even before its name was Jujutsu Kaisen.

Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical School

Later Renamed As Jujutsu Kaisen 0

What seems like a long and complicated name was in fact the original name of the story surrounding Yuta Okkotsu and the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons. This manga series by Gege Akutami was published back in 2017, before Jujutsu Kaisen. After how well received it was, the author decided to start Jujutsu Kaisen and rename this first entry as Jujutsu Kaisen 0, a prologue of the main story. The four chapters that make up the Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical School were released after the rename in a single tankōbon volume in December 2018.

To this day, the debate continues on whether Yuta or Yuji is the better character for the role of protagonist. Truth is Yuta feels more unique and opens up a world of possibilities in his relationship with Rika. This original character was also heavily inspired by Shinji, from Neon Genesis Evangelion, a detail that was perfectly captured during the film adaptation of Jujutsu Kaisen 0 where Megumi Ogata, who did Shinji's voice, also played Yuta's role.

Geto's Ambitions

Within this small framework that makes Jujutsu Kaisen 0 Yuta was the protagonist, but he wasn't the only one to get the spotlight. Suguru Geto is the main antagonist and perpetrator of the infamous Night Parade of a Hundred Demons. A former student from Tokyo Jujutsu High and one of the most powerful sorcerers in the world, Geto was driven away from the jujutsu society after steadily developing a strong hatred for non-sorcerers.

Following the death of some of his friends, the despair and contradictions that this society was creating led him to believe in a different path, a different world, where all that suffering could be avoided. His solution was rather simple, rid the world of every single non-sorcerer, but to accomplish that he would need to first gain a lot of power and shatter the jujutsu society as it was at that moment, including his friend and most powerful being on Earth, Satoru Gojo.

Geto's innate technique allowed him to manipulate cursed spirits after absorbing them. In order to gain power he spent years collecting cursed spirits from cursed humans. However, when he found out about the special grade spirit Rika Orimoto was walking around with a 1st-year student he decided it was the right moment to finally execute his plan, if he could just gain control of Rika. To do so, he designed the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons, a terrorist attack to keep everyone distracted from his true objective. Even if it meant sacrificing his "family" and all his cursed spirits.

The Night Parade of a Hundred Demons, Development And Aftermath

Night Parade of a 100 Demons

The plan itself consisted on Geto releasing all his cursed spirits alongside a few curse users in Kyoto and Shinjuku simultaneously during the night of December 24, 2017. This attack that was warned by Geto himself had all the available sorcerers at the moment ready to defend the cities from the attack which also meant that Yuta and a few others were all alone at Jujutsu High. As according to plan, Suguru infiltrated the school and fought Yuta in an attempt to kill him and gain control over Rika.

His plan was perfect as he knew all the intricacies of the jujutsu society and accurately predicted how everything would go down. Geto was always a great strategist, as shown later in Hidden Inventory, but he made just one miscalculation, Yuta's power and his real connection to Rika. Even with all his power he couldn't defeat him. After being gravely wounded, Satoru Gojo who already deduced what was actually going on arrived at the scene and killed with his own hands his one and only friend.

Geto's death wasn't the only transcendental event caused by the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons. Aoi Todo's amazing display at the Kyoto battlefield gained him not only recognition but a promotion to 1st grade. Yuta, after discovering the true nature of Rika's existence freed her. Miguel, one of the sorcerers Geto recruited for the attack impressed Satoru enough that he also tried to recruit him and become a jujutsu sorcerer, which he did, going on an overseas mission with Yuta.
