The arc in which Ryomen Sukuna, the King of Curses, takes over Fushiguro Megumi’s body: why would Sukuna leave Itadori’s body and take Megumi as a vessel? Many fans seek an answer to that question. And Sukuna has indeed shown interest in Fushiguro over the course of the series since the time they met.

Who Is Sukuna?

Ryomen Sukuna is the King of Curses and the strongest Jujutsu sorcerer from a thousand years ago. To preserve himself and his power, Sukuna transformed into a cursed object after his death and split his power into 20 cursed fingers. He was re-awakened when Itadori Yuuji consumed one of his fingers. With Itadori serving as his vessel, Sukuna was once again born into the world.

Despite having a vessel, Sukuna found himself unable to wield his powers as he so wished. This barely changed even after Itadori consumed more and more of Sukuna’s fingers. After realizing Itadori’s body restricted him, Sukuna set his sights on another target: Fushiguro Megumi.

Who Is Megumi, And How Did He First Encounter Sukuna?

As a descendant of the Zenin clan and an inheritor of the Ten Shadows technique, Megumi possessed a high potential for jujutsu sorcery from the moment he was born. However, Megumi himself never really believed that and, due to some circumstances, only came to know of jujutsu when his father sold him off to the Zenin clan. Mentoring under Satoru Gojo, Megumi became a grade two sorcerer and a first-year at Tokyo Jujutsu High. On a mission to exterminate a curse, he came into contact with Itadori Yuuji, a normal high schooler at the time, and eventually Ryomen Sukuna. When he came into contact with Sukuna, Megumi was powerless to stop the King of Curses, even though he was at his weakest. Thankfully, Satoru Gojo promptly intervened.

Instances Where Sukuna Expressed Interest In Megumi

After their initial meeting, Sukuna expresses interest in Megumi (specifically his technique) in the Cursed Womb arc. While fighting him (Megumi), Sukuna asked why he was holding back his power. He also asked that, as a user of ‘shadows’, why did he run from the special-grade cursed spirit he (Megumi) encountered at the detention center during the Fearsome Womb arc? Seeing a perplexed Megumi, Sukuna did not wait for an answer and instead left him alive.

The next time Sukuna expresses interest in Megumi is during the Death Painting arc. After Megumi conjures a barrierless domain, Sukuna seems very pleased with Megumi’s growth, even though the domain is incomplete. As both Sukuna and Megumi use barrierless domains, his interest sparked various fan theories.

After Megumi first unleashes his domain expansion, the next time Sukuna expresses interest in Megumi is during the Shibuya Incident arc. On his last legs, Megumi summons the strongest of his shikigami, the Divine General Mahoraga. As Mahoraga was too powerful for Megumi to control, summoning it meant he would die alongside his adversary. However, after Megumi summons Mahoraga, Sukuna willingly steps up to kill the shikigami. Before facing Mahoraga, Sukuna heals Megumi and tells him not to die, as he has something for him to do. Unfortunately, fans never get to know what this ‘something’ is until Sukuna takes over Megumi’s body in chapter 212 of the manga.

Why Is Sukuna Interested In Megumi?

Fans were already curious as to what Sukuna had in mind concerning Megumi, as when Jogo forcefed Itadori 10 fingers all at once, Sukuna took control of Itadori, and Jogo told him to take permanent control. However, Sukuna declined, stating he had his own plans. In chapter 212 of the Jujutsu Kaisen manga, Sukuna finally activates the pact he made with Itadori Yuuji for healing him after he (Sukuna) ripped out his heart.

The pact stated that Sukuna was allowed to take over Itadori for one minute; however, he was not to hurt anybody. However, in making this pact, Itadori did not include himself. And so, Sukuna took over him, concentrated the entirety of his soul into one of Itadori’s fingers, cut it off, and force-fed it to Megumi. This allowed Sukuna to take over Megumi and have full control of his body. Moreover, as Sukuna had displayed interest in Megumi’s technique from the beginning, the King of Curses undoubtedly plans to use the technique for something. While the specifics remain unknown, it is seen that Sukuna always displayed interest in Megumi with the hopes of taking over his body and technique.
