Nanami's Unique Ratio Technique

Jujutsu Kaisen: A Ton Of Flair Added To Nanami Just Cutting A Single Curse

In his youth, Nanami was a student at Jujutsu High and an underclassman of Satoru Gojo and Suguru Geto. Nanami was never the most optimistic of individuals and was often very blunt with his actions and expressions. His friend Haibara, who always had a smile on his face, was the opposite of him: blunt and direct.

As underclassmen of Gojo and Geto, Nanami and Haibara often helped with missions. Despite their contrasting personalities and ideologies, the duo seemed to get along well. As Nanami grew up, he became stronger and more mature. His Ratio technique allowed him to forcibly create a weak point on an individual or object at the seven-to-three ratio point. Using this technique, Nanami developed himself as a Jujutsu sorcerer until he finally became a first-grade sorcerer.

How Nanami’s Life Shaped Who He Is

Nanami

Nanami was introduced early on in the Jujutsu Kaisen anime and manga series. Before he took over as a close mentor to Itadori Yuuji, Nanami had worked a corporate job. Initially, he was a student at Jujutsu High; however, after going on a mission with his friend Haibara and watching the latter die, Nanami 'ran away' from the world of Jujutsu, as he felt it was stupid that sorcerers must accept that they and/or their comrades could die at any time, and they had no choice but to accept it. Because of Haibara’s death and other factors, Nanami left the Jujutsu world. However, while the Jujutsu world didn’t make much sense to him, Nanami quickly realized that working a corporate job didn’t give him much solace, as he felt his work wasn’t really helping the lives of anyone around him. After exorcizing a cursed spirit that bothered a woman who knew nothing about her situation, Nanami decided to return to Jujutsu society.

Now fully back in Jujutsu society, Nanami had to mentor Itadori, even though the latter believed that they wouldn’t get along. Initially, Nanami didn’t approve of Itadori because he didn’t want to see him lose his youth to the many inconveniences that created adults. However, after Itadori proved his strength and resolve against Mahito, Nanami was forced to recognize him, and the duo developed an amicable relationship.

In Nanami’s life, the things he truly cared about were saving lives and stocking up on little bits of appreciation from various people after dispatching cursed spirits. While many of his failures haunted him, the sorcerer always pushed ahead to become better and do more to prevent such failures ever again.

The Death Of Kento Nanami

Nanami final words

In the ongoing Shibuya arc of the Jujutsu Kaisen anime series, Nanami overwhelms Shigemo before being overwhelmed by the special-grade curse spirits Dagon and Jogo. When facing Dagon, Nanami was barely able to keep his life going with the help of Naobito Zenin and Megumi. Moreover, after Toji Fushiguro appeared in Dagon’s domain, most of the fighting was left to him.

After surviving Dagon’s onslaught, Jogo quickly dispatched Nanami, Naobito, and Maki. While half of his body was burned to a crisp and he was on death's door, Nanami still managed to put up a fight against several of Mahito’s transfigured humans. Despite facing special-grade cursed spirits one after the other, Nanami remained an extremely capable individual until his death. Unfortunately, dealing with so many special-grade cursed spirits one after the other proved too much even for a grade-one Jujutsu sorcerer.

Right as he was about to die, Haibara appeared to Nanami as he (Nanami) asked what he was trying to accomplish by coming back to Jujutsu society even after he ran away. As Haibara pointed to Itadori as the answer to Nanami’s question, Nanami left Itadori with the words, “You take it from here.” Immediately after saying that, Mahito killed the grade-one sorcerer.

Nanami Left Behind a Lasting Legacy in the Jujutsu Kaisen World

Nanami is unlike Satoru Gojo, who has left a lot of impact on a wide variety of people. However, while he is unlike the strongest sorcerer in modern Jujutsu society, Nanami still left a strong impression on people such as Itadori, Takuma Ino, Megumi, and Nobara. The impressions he left on Itadori and Takuma Ino were particularly profound, as Nanami was more than an ally to them. He was a teacher and a mentor who deeply cared about his students. With Itadori hearing his last words, “You take it from here,” the young lad has to live up to Nanami’s expectations.

While now dead, the life of Kento Nanami has been one with purpose and a drive to help people around him, even though he sees most things as bothersome. While he wasn’t the most cheerful of sorcerers, Nanami still left a great impact on his students with his dedication and strength. All in all, the actions of the former grade-one Jujutsu sorcerer helped a lot of people, which may lead some to the conclusion that it made his life worth living.
