With the strongest modern sorcerer seemingly back on the battlefield now, there is quite a lot of doubt in the minds of some fans as to how this would affect the story, with some worrying that this could mean Yuji's progression is going to be limited greatly.

How Gojo Died In Shinjuku

Gojo Fought An Intense Battle Against Sukuna

Gojo fought an absolutely brilliant battle against Sukuna in Shinjuku. As soon as he was unsealed, fans knew that he would eventually go on to fight against the King of Curses and showcase to everyone his true skill set. This also ended up becoming the perfect opportunity for Sukuna to show the fans what he was truly capable of.

Sukuna had an extra advantage in this battle, and that came through the 10 Shadows Technique, specifically Mahoraga, who helped him carve his path out to victory. That said, the fight between Gojo and Sukuna was an incredibly close one, where, in one moment, Gojo would be seen on top, and in the other, Sukuna would be the dominant one. Fans got to witness several domain clashes throughout this battle, and cursed techniques being used at full throttle. Fans also got to see reverse cursed technique being utilized like never before in this fight, and, overall, Gege did a very good job at portraying that both Gojo and Sukuna were far beyond human levels and that the others couldn't even comprehend the level at which they manipulated cursed energy.

Farewell, Gojo Satoru! I shall never forget you for as long as I live.

This was truly an incredible fight for the fans and the multiple chapters that this battle spanned over were truly the pinnacle of this story. However, in the end, there could only have been one winner and, with that, fans knew that, for plot reasons, Gojo had to die. Gojo ended up being the one falling in this battle, as Sukuna utilized the power of Mahoraga to earn a blueprint that allowed him to expand the target of his technique to the entire world, creating the World Splitting Dismantle. This technique cut right through Gojo's Infinity and chopped his body into pieces, leaving him for dead.

Gojo's Return In Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 260

Gojo Appeared In Front Of Sukuna As A Ghost

Despite Gojo dying in JJK chapter 236, the pathway to his return was already set by the author. Now, this wasn't a confirmation of the fact that Gojo would return. However, it simply meant that if the author wanted Gojo to re-enter the story, he had a way to integrate him back. That is precisely what he did when he had Gojo meet with his friends in a plane of existence between life and death. There, the concept of going north and south was explored. Essentially, if one was content with themselves and wanted to return to their old self, they would head south. If one wanted to start anew, in a completely different direction, then they would head north. Knowing Gojo, fans knew that he would never be content with things being just the way they were, and that he would likely head north.

Once again, a confirmation was never provided to the fans, but the basis for his return was set right there. Things became even more solid when his body was revealed to have been transported to Shoko, an individual with high-level reverse cursed technique who could potentially have healed him and helped him utilize his own powers to heal himself as well.

Jujutsu Kaisen: Aoi Todo's Renewed Boogie Woogie, Explained

Aoi Todo makes his comeback with Boogie Woogie in JJK. His help will be essential in this fight vs Sukuna.

Finally, in JJK chapter 260, Gojo returned to the battlefield, moments before Sukuna tried to expand his domain. As soon as he tried to cast his second Malevolent Shrine in mere minutes, he was distracted by someone's presence nearby. As Sukuna looked to his left, Gojo emerged from the smoke, with one of his eyes gleaming.

Sukuna had seen...what his hands had buried. The ghost of the strongest!

The narrator made it clear that Sukuna witnessed the ghost that he had buried by himself earlier. At the same time, the editor confirmed that these eyes belonged to none other than Gojo, and that set the basis for the return of the strongest modern sorcerer.

Why Gojo's Return Is Perfect For The Story

Gojo Is Needed In The Story For Many Reasons

Now that Gojo has returned to the story, either as a ghost or a man back from death, fans might wonder as to whether this return is a good thing or not. The biggest worry that a lot of the fans have right now is that Gojo is going to completely overshadow Yuju and his progression in this fight if he's truly back. Undoubtedly, Yuji has been magnificent in his battle against Sukuna, and he has also hit an incredibly high level. However, it would be very preposterous to assume that he would reach a level where he would surpass Sukuna right here and now. Sukuna is the strongest in history and for Yuji to surpass him within a matter of minutes would certainly not be fitting. It is much better if Yuji progresses in battle alongside someone like Gojo. This doesn't have to mean that Gojo takes the spotlight, or that he fights Sukuna alone. It simply means that Gojo would fight alongside Yuji and Todo in this battle and end the King of Curses for good.

Fans need to take into consideration the fact that Gojo will not return to this battle at full strength. If Gojo is at full strength, then he would absolutely crush Sukuna right here, and that is simply down to the fact that he possesses the means to do so, and Sukuna is incredibly weak at this point in time. However, Gojo's return could also mean that he had to place the Binding Vow on himself and nerf himself in order to return from death. This would make it a perfect battle, as a weakened Gojo, Yuji, and Todo would grow up against the weakened Sukuna and finish the battle for good.

Above all, Gojo's return is perfect for this plot because there are many loose ends that he needs to tie. Gojo needs to save Megumi and lead by example. He needs to tell Megumi the truth about his father. He needs to give Suguru a proper burial, just as he planned. And above all, he needs to create a new Jujutsu era by overthrowing the old and corrupt order, as he revealed earlier. Gojo wants to be seen as more than just the strongest, and his return facilitates that in the perfect way. Regardless of what fans think about his return, this is the perfect decision that the author could have taken, and it is one that only elevates the story even more from here onwards.

Jujutsu Kaisen is available to read via Viz Media. The series can be read by the fans officially and for free on the Shonen Jump and the Manga Plus app. The release date for the next chapter of JJK, Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 261, is set to be May 26, 2024.
