The end of JJK is near.

Gojo returned after being unsealed in the Culling Game and, there, a fight between him and the King of Curses, Sukuna, ensued. This fight was incredibly intense and certainly one of the best that fans have seen in the story, however, the conclusion to this fight did not make much sense and not only was it wrapped up in a very questionable manner which did not make much sense, but it also did so while assassinating the character of Gojo and destroying his character arc entirely.

Gojo's Goals And Character Arc

Gojo is a character that fans were introduced to very early on in Jujutsu Kaisen. This character met Yuji immediately after his execution was announced following him eating Sukuna's finger, a cursed object. Gojo then, slowly, went on to show fans who exactly he was, how strong he was, and also what his gold was. On the surface, Gojo looked like a guy who did not care about much but he revealed that he certainly had his own goals as a sorcerer. A member of the Gojo family, he was believed to be an exalted figure and he single-handedly kept his entire family in check, being known as their very pride, largely due to the immense strength that he possessed due to the Six Eyes and the Limitless technique.

While Gojo himself belonged to the Big 3 families, his disdain for the current Jujutsu world order was quite apparent. Gojo knew that the world was rotten to the very core and he wanted to change this, however, to do that, Gojo would have to start a revolution. Gojo could easily have killed everyone since he was just that strong, however, this solution would certainly not have been sustainable. It would not have lasted and that is why Gojo decided to change the system from the inside out. He decided to raise the next generation and change the Jujutsu order from within. By doing this, Gojo would change the entire world and help his students create a society where the powerless wouldn't be trampled upon or discarded.

At one point, Gojo’s character certainly did not care about the weak, however, after the events of the Hidden Inventory arc, both Gojo and Geto had a stark change in character. While Geto decided to eliminate every single non-sorcerer, Gojo decided to change the order from within and solve the problem his own way.

With Gojo having established his goals, the image of his very own character was called into question by Geto as well. Shortly after Geto became a villain, he quizzed Gojo on whether he was Gojo because he was the strongest or if he was the strongest because he was Gojo. This is a question that is at the core of Gojo's very own character arc – to find the true meaning of his character and whether his personality has made him the strongest or if his current personality exists because he was born the strongest.

The fight Yuji and Higuruma vs Sukuna has finally begun in the JJK manga.

These questions made Gojo the enigmatic character that he was and, of course, at the same time, there were many other facets to his personality that made him incredibly fun as a character. It goes without saying that Gojo was one of the very best-written characters in JJK, largely due to his character revolving around these aspects, however, the Culling Game arc so to it that Gojo was completely and utterly assassinated as a character.

How Gojo's Character Was Assassinated In The Culling Game

Gojo fought against Sukuna in the Culling Game arc and there, he brought out the best of his powers and put on quite a display. While his fight was certainly entertaining, there was something about his character writing around these chapters that did not sit well with the fans.

Gojo barely interacted with his very own students after returning and this in itself was very weird. However, this whole ordeal kept getting worse the more he fought against Sukuna. When Gojo eventually died, fans got to see him meet his fellow peers who had already passed on. The biggest shock that he was met with came from his conversation with Geto, Nanami, and others. They told Gojo that he was always a self-serving person who used sorcery as a means of self-fulfillment. Essentially, they called Gojo a person who served himself and lived and used Jujutsu sorcery for his own fun and nothing else.

What's more, it was also made clear to the fans that Gojo was essentially a character who never cared about saving people yet, from the very first few chapters of the story, it has always been clear that Gojo wanted to save people around him and it is for those reasons that he intended to revolutionize the current world order and was one of the reasons why he became a teacher in the first place. Fans also know that Gojo deeply cares about his students.

Gojo seemed to affirm this by simply looking at smiling and looking back at his life. Gojo mentioned that he honed his skill to the very best and wanted to be the one to teach Sukuna the true meaning of love, however, despite all that, he failed. The truth is that Gojo is a character who is self-centered to quite an extent, however, to reduce his entire character to being a selfish person fighting for his own pleasure isn't right. Gojo established his goals at the very beginning of the story and it seems that the author himself has forgotten about it.

If that wasn't enough, Gojo's death essentially meant that the question of whether Gojo was the strongest because of his personality or if his personality existed because he was born the strongest was never going to be answered ever. This question was left up and the air and the biggest facet of his character arc was left unanswered. Gojo was essentially reduced to “the strongest.”

Even in being the strongest, he was stripped of his pride when Gojo himself was seen saying that he wasn't sure if he could defeat Sukuna even if he did not have access to the 10 Shadows Technique. This was a shock to the fans, especially because they had witnessed the fight with their own eyes, and through the vast majority of it, Gojo was the one in control and Sukuna was on the ropes. The conclusion of the fight made absolutely no sense and, at the same time, it took away any chance of a good character arc conclusion for Gojo, while reducing him to a selfish person despite him having outlined his goals long ago in the story.

Hopefully, if Gojo is still returning to the story, the author will focus on these aspects of his character and make for a compelling end to the character arc, which has the potential to be, by far, one of the very best in the entire series.
