With cursed energy and sorcerers wielding cursed energy, the entire world of Jujutsu Kaisen is centered on the use of cursed energy. Cursed Energy is the primary power source for sorcerers, enabling them to perform Cursed Techniques and combat curses effectively. Sorcerers must learn to harness and manipulate their own Cursed Energy to create various effects, namely Cursed Techniques. Cursed techniques in Jujutsu Kaisen are activated through the infusion of cursed energy, employing either the Lapse or Reversal processes.

Lapse involves circulating cursed energy in a forward direction, while Reversal generates positive energy by multiplying negative energy. The effectiveness of cursed techniques is influenced by a sorcerer's skill in minimizing activation components like hand signs and empowered words, with intentional inclusions enhancing their effectiveness. While these techniques vary depending on the user, all techniques are innate or non-innate, and innate techniques can be broken down further as some are inherited.

After the tragic Shibuya Incident, what consequences await in Season 3's Culling Game Arc?

Anyone Can Do Non-Innate Techniques

Junpei

Non-Innate Techniques in Jujutsu Kaisen are skills that anyone with enough cursed energy can learn through intense training. One Non-Innate Technique includes Barrier Techniques. Barrier Techniques are used to trap entities within a specific space; this can include sorcerers, non-sorcerers, as well as curses. Simple barriers, such as curtains, can even be used by those without an innate technique, such as Ijichi Kiyotaka, the assistant director at Tokyo Jujutsu High.

Another Non-Innate Technique is Shikigami Jutsu. Shikigami Jutsu involves the conjuring of shikigami - monstrous creatures that resemble cursed spirits. Yoshino Junpei, a high-schooler turned curse user manipulated by Mahito, was able to summon shikigami with poison. This technique, called Moon Dregs, is a shikigami resembling a jellyfish creature that has the ability to paralyze targets with poison that burns the victim's skin. Curses can also use shikigami, as Dagon did during the Shibuya Incident when fighting Kento Nanami, Zenin Maki, Zenin Naobito, and Fushiguro Megumi. Using Death Swarm, Dagon was able to conjure a seemingly infinite amount of man-eating fish shikigami.

Cursed Users are Born with Innate Cursed Techniques

Nobara Kugisaki

Innate Techniques in Jujutsu Kaisen are unique abilities inherent to a sorcerer, engraved in the right prefrontal cortex. These abilities, emerging around the age of five or six, are exclusive and account for eighty percent of a sorcerer's skill set, making them difficult to replicate. While most individuals have a single innate technique, rare cases, like Kenjaku's body-switching ability, can access additional techniques, though an overload is limited to three to four innate techniques to prevent overwhelming the user's brain.

Nobara Kugisaki's Straw Doll Technique is an example of an Innate Cursed Technique. By imbuing her cursed energy through her equipment, Nobara is able to manipulate her hammer, nails, and straw doll. She is also able to activate long-range attacks by launching nails and detonate them or by using her straw doll as an effigy. Kokichi Muta’s Innate Curse Technique - Puppet Manipulation - allows him to control numerous cursed corpse puppets remotely, like his Ultimate Mechamaru and Mini-Mechamaru puppets. Todo Aoi’s Boogie Woogie Technique, which allows him to switch places with someone he has touched, and even Itadori Yuji’s superhuman strength are both Innate Curse Techniques.

Yuji and Mahito are characters that initially seem as if they couldn't be further apart, but when taking a closer look, they're pretty similar.

Inherited Cursed Techniques Are All About Family

Toji

These are techniques passed down from one person to another, often within a family or a specific lineage. Primarily seen in the Big Three Clans, the Zenin Clan, the Gojo Clan, and the Kamo Clan, Inherited techniques can be passed through various means, such as blood relations, adoption, or intentional transfer. Despite not having any Cursed Energy herself, Zenin Maki inherits her family's Cursed Technique, which is associated with creating and using powerful Cursed Tools. The Kamo Family is known for their Blood Manipulation Cursed Technique. This technique allows the sorcerer to control and shape their blood, including turning it into weapons. The blood of the Blood Manipulation user is poisonous.

So far, in the anime, the Blood Manipulation Cursed Technique has been inherited by both Noritoshi and Choso. Fushiguro Megumi, whose father Toji is a member of the Zenin Clan, inherited the Ten Shadows Technique. This allows him to summon Shikigami creatures, such as the Divine Dogs, a pair of twin wolves that attack curses with their fangs before consuming them. Satoru Gojo inherited the Limitless Technique from the Gojo Clan. This technique allows the user to manipulate and distort space at will. Any member of the Gojo Clan can inherit the Limitless Technique; however, only those who have inherited the Six Eyes can master it. As the first sorcerer to be born with both the Limitless and the Six Eyes in the last four hundred years, Gojo is considered one of the strongest sorcerers to ever live. The Six Eyes give him enhanced perception of Cursed Energy, allowing him to see and react to attacks with incredible precision, as well as perceive and understand the flow of time.

Inherited Techniques are Not Limited to Only the Big Three Clans

Toge

Toge of the Inumaki Family inherited the Cursed Speech Technique. The Cursed Speech Technique imbues the user’s words with cursed energy. To use the technique, the user must have markings called Snake Eyes and Fangs. Toge Inumaki has seal markings on his cheeks and tongue. Because the Cursed Speech Technique uses words, Toge speaks only in the names of sushi ingredients in his day-to-day life to avoid inadvertently activating his technique.

With the Culling Game Arc looming in the future and the revelation of Itadori being the brother of Choso, a member of the Kamo Clan, Innate and Inherited Cursed Techniques will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in JJK’s Season 3. The impending conflict, fueled by the mysterious and dangerous game, will delve deeper into the complexities of sorcery and the profound impact of one's lineage on their supernatural abilities.

Jujutsu Kaisen is currently available for streaming on Prime Video.
