Highlights

  • Choso, initially introduced as an antagonist, is now allied with Itadori and considers himself Itadori's brother - a title he has proven himself worthy of.
  • Choso, a Cursed Womb: Death Painting, can manipulate blood and has an almost limitless supply of it, making him a formidable opponent for Itadori.
  • Choso's connection to Itadori stems from the deep-seated sensation he feels when his brothers die, leading him to believe that Itadori is his brother. Despite their initial conflict, Choso becomes a dedicated and trusting elder brother to Itadori.

Right from the Death Painting Arc, Choso was introduced to the Jujutsu Kaisen anime and manga series as an antagonist working with Mahito’s Group. However, in recent times, Choso is now allied with Itadori, and as manga readers know, he has even faced Kenjaku. In the Shibuya arc of Jujutsu Kaisen, Choso is seen calling himself Itadori’s brother.

While many initially took it as fun and games, Choso actually has relations to Itadori and can be called a distant brother; moreover, he has also proved himself worthy of bearing the title. However, even with their relations, in different parts of his and Itadori’s lives, Choso has served different roles, whether it be as an antagonist, a brother, or even just a supporter.

Choso’s Origins

Choso vs Itadori

Choso is a Cursed Womb: Death Painting, not a full cursed spirit. His mother was a unique individual who could give birth to cursed spirits, and to experiment, Kenjaku, in the form of Noritoshi Kamo, mixed his blood with hers, acting as a third parent, making Kenjaku his father. Choso has been alive for at least 150 years, during which he mastered and experimented with his blood manipulation technique. It’s worth noting that the Kamo clan has blood manipulation as a hereditary technique that is passed down through generations. If Choso is the son of Noritoshi Kamo (Kenjaku), perhaps that’s where he gets his technique from. Apart from Itadori, whom he calls his brother, Choso has eight other brothers. However, so far, only Eso and Kechizu have played a somewhat prominent role in the series.

A Minor Antagonist

Choso Blood Technique

In the Death Painting Arc, Choso was briefly introduced after Itadori and Nobara killed his brothers Eso and Kechizu. As the brothers weren’t that powerful, not many expected Choso to be so much stronger than them either. However, Choso overturned expectations. In the Shibuya arc of the series, he faced Itadori, and the latter stood no chance.

Choso’s cursed technique is blood manipulation, similar to Noritoshi Kamo's of the current age. As the name implies, the technique allows Choso to manipulate blood in and out of his body. However, unlike most humans, Choso’s cursed energy can be converted to blood, meaning he doesn’t suffer from things like losing too much blood, making the blood available to him almost limitless. Despite his lack of combat experience, with his many years of experimenting, Choso used his blood in many ways, and Itadori was found at a loss. Despite Itadori and Mechamaru managing to limit Choso’s use of his blood by putting him in a waterlogged environment, Choso still managed to soundly beat Itadori. He would have killed the latter; however, memories that didn’t exist suddenly resurfaced in his mind, making him disoriented.

Choso and Itadori

At the climax of their battle, when Choso was about to end Itadori, the former had a deep-seated sensation of Itadori’s death, which sent him into a frenzy. Due to his abilities, Choso can feel whenever a transformation occurs with his brothers, and as death is a transformation, Choso can feel it too. Feeling Itadori’s ‘death’ made Choso believe that Itadori must be his brother, and with Kenjaku, the renowned body hopper, as the link, it is possible. Not much is currently known about Itadori’s past and parents; however, in a flashback, Itadori’s mother was seen with Kenjaku’s signature forehead stitches. Now, whether or not Kenjaku possessed Kaori’s body before, during, or after her pregnancy with Itadori is unknown; however, if he possessed her before getting pregnant, then he would also be Itadori’s third parent, and Itadori’s immense natural physical prowess might as well be from him.

A Brother

Itadori

After almost killing Itadori and coming to the conclusion that Itadori must be his brother, Choso went from being a minor antagonist to being Itadori’s brother. At first, Itadori found this weird and confusing; however, after Choso proved himself, Itadori eventually warmed up to him. In the Jujutsu Kaisen anime series, Choso faced Kenjaku and Uraume. He faced Kenjaku as he considered the man evil for the despicable acts he committed in Choso’s life, which involved interfering in his entire birth process and experimenting on his mother.

While the entire battle between them was short, Choso showcased his prowess by facing Kenjaku and Uraume at Itadori’s aid. Even after the Shibuya arc ended, Choso continued staying by Itadori’s side, forgiving him for killing his brothers and blaming himself instead for allowing them to die, and even joining Mahito’s group because he felt his brothers weren’t going to be accepted into the human world. As Choso opened up to Itadori and berated himself for trying to take the easy way out, he showed that he completely didn’t blame Itadori for the deaths of his brothers.

To outrightly go from enemy to ally shows just how much Choso’s dedication to his brothers is. After Shibuya, Choso stayed with Itadori and combated many cursed spirits with him, guiding and witnessing Itadori’s growth.

Choso’s Contribution To The Plot

Choso

While Choso is a supporting character in the series, his contributions have been major. After joining Itadori’s side, he helped him deal with cursed spirits, Naoya, and even faced Kenjaku alongside Yuki Tsukumo when Tengen needed bodyguards. After declaring Itadori his brother, Choso has given his all to act like one, using his dedication to his brothers as a source of power in hard times. While Choso initially played the role of a minor antagonist in Itadori’s life, after discovering the truth, he has and will continue to play the role of a trusting and dedicated elder brother who loves and cares for his siblings. In hard times, Choso has impacted Itadori, allowing the latter to know that he’s not alone, a form of closure that Itadori needed after the presumed deaths of Nobara Kugisaki and Fushiguro Megumi.
