In an attempt to save his friends, he swallows the cursed object and becomes the host of a powerful Curse known as Sukuna Ryoumen, a legendary Curse that was once a fearsome sorcerer.

Itadori finds himself thrust into the world of jujutsu sorcery, where he meets Satoru Gojo, "the strongest" jujutsu sorcerer and joins Tokyo Jujutsu High, where he meets other young jujutsu sorcerers. One being Zenin Maki. Without revealing specific details to avoid spoilers, Maki will be playing a critical role in JJK's upcoming Season Three - the Culling Game Arc. After the tragic Shibuya Incident, what consequences await in Season 3's Culling Game Arc?

Who is Maki?

Maki Zenin-2

Maki was born into the Zenin family, a clan with deep roots in the world of jujutsu sorcery and considered one of the Big Three Families, alongside the Gojo and Kamo families. Although born into this powerful family, she enters the world without the ability to see curses—a crucial trait for any sorcerer. This becomes a significant issue, leading to her ostracization by her family. Maki's struggle is further complicated by her familial ties, notably with her sister Mai Zenin.

Mai, unlike Maki, can see cursed energy and does possess some cursed energy - although very little. Despite the challenges posed by her lack of cursed energy and the strain on her relationship with her sister, Maki is considered a very skilled sorcerer among her peers. To overcome her inability to see cursed energy, Maki has special glasses. These glasses are imbued with cursed energy that allows her to detect curses.

Maki’s Physical Strength is a Result of Heavenly Restriction

Maki Kicking

Heavenly Restriction is a type of cursed restriction that influences an individual's cursed energy, imposing limitations or enhancements on their body. Heavenly Restriction has been known to reduce a sorcerer's cursed energy to levels comparable to those of a non-sorcerer in various instances - like with Kokichi Muta. Another example would be Toji, who, similar to Maki, was born without any cursed energy and exhibited even more extraordinary physical prowess.

Maki’s Compensates for Lack of Cursed Energy with Weapons

Maki

Maki compensates for her lack of cursed energy by excelling in the use of cursed tools, setting her apart from many jujutsu sorcerers who heavily rely on cursed energy to enhance their combat skills. Her proficiency with cursed tools, including polearms, spears, and a katana, makes her a formidable force in battles. This proficiency was evident as she trained Yuta when he first came to Jujutsu High. Maki's prowess with weapons is highlighted by her ability to switch between multiple of them within a single fight seamlessly. In a battle against Hanami alongside Fushiguro Megumi, Maki initially wielded a katana. When the katana broke during the fight, Megumi swapped it with Playful Cloud. Playful Cloud is a three-section staff connected by three rings between the joints, lacking a specific cursed technique but relying on the user's power. Despite Megumi noting its difficulty, Maki effortlessly wielded the weapon, underscoring her exceptional physical strength. Other notable users of Playful Cloud include Suguru Geto, Aoi Todo, and Toji.

Ultimately, despite being born without cursed energy and constrained by the Heavenly Restriction, Maki has proven that these limitations do not diminish her prowess as a jujutsu sorcerer. Despite her current Grade 4 ranking, influential figures like Satoru Gojo and Mei Mei recognize her true potential, believing she deserves at least a Grade 2 status. As Jujutsu Kaisen explores themes of fear, courage, and the consequences of negative emotions, the treatment and underestimation of Zenin Maki makes her a character to watch in Season Three's Culling Game Arc.

Jujutsu Kaisen is currently available for streaming on Prime Video.
