Highlights

  • Sukuna despises Yuji because he embodies everything that goes against Sukuna's selfish and violent nature. Yuji's selflessness and desire to help others clash with Sukuna's need for power and pleasure.
  • Sukuna finds Yuji boring and sees him as inferior. Sukuna's mastery of cursed energy and powerful techniques makes him view Yuji's basic abilities as juvenile and uninteresting.
  • Despite Sukuna's immense power, Yuji is the only one who can keep him at bay. Yuji's ability to control Sukuna and resist his influence frustrates Sukuna, especially since he was initially supposed to be a vessel for Sukuna's power.

Jujutsu Kaisen is a series that is defined by the relationships that many characters have with each other and how those characters themselves operate in the world. In Sukuna's case, however, he is someone who lives completely for himself and according to his own standards, always being content in his isolation from everyone else. Since his strength is unmatched, he has a very interesting way of thinking of those who are beneath him.

Despite having no one to match him, Sukuna still respects strength above all else and in his fights with other strong characters, he has always acknowledged their prowess or potential. Everyone, except for Yuji Itadori. Ever since the first episode of Jujutsu Kaisen, Sukuna has been inextricably linked with Yuji and has since had an undying hatred for the Jujutsu High first-year, so in this article, let's take a look at why that is.

Jujutsu Kaisen is filled with many fantastic episodes. The following have secured the highest rating on IMDb.

Sukuna's Selfish Personality Doesn't Mesh Well With Yuji's Desire to do Good

Much like Mahito, Sukuna can also be seen as the opposite face of the same coin as Yuji. Where Sukuna exists as the embodiment of selfishness who is always out only to satisfy his own needs and pleasure, Yuji exists solely to help other people, even if that comes at the cost of his own life. The themes of contrasting ideals within the story are on full display with these two characters, who are inseparable for most of it.

One of the biggest reasons why Sukuna hates Yuji is because of this very fact. Back in the Heian era, Sukuna was a calamity who was worshipped as a God, a sorcerer so mighty that he utterly wiped out entire forces and armies on a whim and lived utterly for himself. However, in the modern day, he is forced to exist within this vessel that is far weaker than he is and is a person that goes against everything Sukuna stands for, as Yuji is as altruistic and selfless as they come.

Jujutsu Kaisen: Every Domain Expansion So Far, Ranked

Domain Expansion in Jujutsu Kaisen is an important strategy in the series, but only a few characters can do it.

Being forced to live in the body of a person whose existence is the sole antithesis of his ideals is the cause for much of Sukuna's resentment towards Yuji. In the Shibuya Incident, Sukuna takes special pride in showing Yuji all the destruction he caused while inhabiting his body, to show him that despite never wanting to, Yuji has also now become the selfish murderer that Sukuna had always been.

Sukuna Doesn't See Yuji As His Equal

More than anything else, Sukuna finds Yuji to be boring beyond belief. The main reason for this is that Sukuna is ancient and is armed with the most powerful Domain Expansion and the most powerful Cursed Technique in the series. He is a master of Cursed Energy and his knowledge and understanding of it is unparalleled, so when Yuji came onto the scene with a very basic Cursed Technique, Sukuna grew awfully bored by it.

Sukuna takes every moment that he can to mock Yuji, calling him boring and his ideals juvenile. So, Sukuna can never understand why someone so weak and unassuming as Yuji acts more like a cage for him than a vessel as he is unable to take over his body. In the Culling Game arc, Sukuna went on to hint that the reason Yuji is so strong is that he is an experiment of Kenjaku from long ago, done in order to make the perfect vessel for Sukuna.

Itadori Yuji

However, whatever Kenjaku ended up doing seemed to work a bit too well, as Yuji is the only person able to keep Sukuna at bay in his body. Though the specific reason as to why this is still remains a mystery, it is known that despite Sukuna's immense power and legendary status, he was being controlled by a first-year at Jujutsu High. While ingesting a single finger is enough for Sukuna to control anyone else, Yuji was able to easily keep Sukuna controlled, even after eating multiple fingers over the course of the story.

This is something that has proven to be a major cause of contention for the King of Curses as the very same, boring 16-year-old with a basic Cursed Technique and low cursed energy is enough to cage Sukuna inside of him. Sukuna was only able to take control of Yuji for a decent amount of time after being fed 10 fingers by Jogo during the Shibuya Incident, though he still couldn't maintain control forever as he eventually had to switch back.

Yuji Doesn't Just Let Sukuna Do As He Pleases

Sukuna Vs Yuji

In the recent chapters of the Jujutsu Kaisen manga, Yuji and Sukuna have finally started their long-awaited battle. Ever since the very first episode, their constant tug-of-war and battle of ideals had been foreshadowed, with Sukuna finally being confronted with everything that he has done to Yuji in their time together and Yuji finally confronting the curse that has taken so much away from him.

One thing that Sukuna has never forgotten was the brief time he got bested by Yuji in his own Innate Domain. After the events of the Juvenile Detention Centre when Yuji died, both he and Sukuna got into an argument within Sukuna's Innate Domain, where the King of Curses was punched very hard across the face by the teenager. This was something he could never have expected, where someone as powerful and arrogant as him got sucker punched by someone he thought of as so much inferior to himself.

All of this, along with how Yuji serves as the exact opposite of everything that Sukuna stands for, is very indicative of why Sukuna hates him so much. As their battle finally begins and the story of Jujutsu Kaisen finally approaches its end, the two contrasting characters finally confront one another to decide whose ideals and approach to life are superior.

Sukuna's hatred for Yuji is what best defined the relationship that they had as Sukuna always viewed Yuji as being someone who resists his will and no matter how powerful he is or how much he tries, he could never get the better of the same boring brat. In their fight, only one can come out on top, so let's wait to see how Yuji will defeat the King of Curses.

Jujutsu Kaisen can be streamed on Amazon Prime and Netflix.
