Avengers: Endgame saw the climactic finale of a decades-worth of storytelling in the MCU. In that ending, many fans saw the final moments of the very popular and divisive Thanos, played by Josh Brolin.

Avengers: Endgame follows up where the previous film left off and saw the Avengers face off against their biggest threat yet. Thanos was teased many years prior to him becoming a full-fledged main antagonist. This character was always the overarching threat that was in the background, while other villains such as Loki were just pawns. Thanos was brought to life via high-tech motion capture equipment and an incredible performance by Brolin.

Despite his demise, Thanos' legacy lives on even outside of Marvel, as the character has become a very popular icon amongst pop culture fans. Recently, Brolin has discussed the topic of whether he's open to returning to the character down the road. "[Marvel Studios has] their own trajectory that they're worrying about and if they want me to do it, I would do it I'm sure, but I don't know what they're thinking, " Brolin said during an interview on The Jess Cagle Show. "We've kind of bookended this thing after 10 years. I was so happy and I loved being involved in that so much because that wasn't the intention when I first got involved."

Thanos was never meant to be a constant reoccurring character, as the actor points out. "The whole Thanos character, it was more of a cameo and they liked the character so much, "Brolin said. "They had never felt like they had a villain that was substantial enough for what they were creating and then I think they felt like they found it and then there were two movies that kind of revolved around it. It was a lot of fun and it worked out for them very nicely."

Indeed it did. Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame have one of the best portrayals of Thanos in Marvel media history. Thanos was intimidating, blunt, and a huge problem to deal with. In the comics, the character has a much deeper backstory and was involved in several stories. However, there's a shelf life that comes with live-action adaptations, so it makes sense why the character had to go sooner rather than later.

Right now fans are ready for the next MCU villain. More specifically, many are patiently waiting for Doctor Doom to finally appear. Kang the Conqueror is likely next and he's set to be a great villain for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as he'll be played by the talented Jonathan Majors (Lovecraft Country, The Harder They Fall, Creed III). There's a lot in store for comic fans to look forward to.
