The JoJo series has taken fans all around the world, telling its narrative throughout different eras and generations. From Victorian England to Egypt, Japan, and Italy, the series has introduced viewers and readers to a variety of settings. Part 6 takes a different approach, confining the majority of the narrative to the Green Dolphin Street Prison.

The prison serves as the setting for the majority of Stone Ocean, trapping Jolyne and company within a dangerous environment they have to try and survive. Though her father was briefly jailed in his youth, Jolyne’s incarceration was much more serious. While it seems unfortunate at first, the chain of events that led to her arrest ends up being much more significant to the narrative later on.

Before Stone Ocean

Born just a few years after the events of Stardust Crusaders, Jolyne is Jotaro’s only child. It’s fair to say that Jolyne had a troubled upbringing, as she never had much of a relationship with her father due to the nature of his work. This created a rift between the two years later, which was accentuated by Jolyne’s frustrations towards her parents’ divorce.

Much like Jotaro in his youth, Jolyne was a delinquent, committing petty crimes from an early age. Five years prior to the start of Stone Ocean, Jolyne was arrested for stealing a car, partially due to a misunderstanding. She evaded incarceration due to her age, but the event further strained her relationship with her father when he refused to be with his family, going to Tokyo for work instead.

The continued neglect from Jotaro would cause Jolyne to further spiral out of control in subsequent years. Following the car-jacking incident, Jolyne would go on to commit more petty crimes. She was most notably briefly part of a gang called the Hell Riders who stole cars and bikes during this time.

With no direction and no positive outlet to vent her frustrations, Jolyne seemed to be heading down the wrong path. Luckily, she eventually began to turn things around. Jolyne left the gang sometime in between her first arrest and the beginning of Stone Ocean, improving her studies and dating a well-to-do boy named Romeo as well. Sadly for Jolyne, things wouldn’t last and she’d unexpectedly find herself framed for a crime she didn’t commit just as things were looking good for her.

The Hit-and-Run Incident

Shortly before the start of Part 6, Jolyne was involved in a hit-and-run accident while out on a drive with Romeo. Panicked and worried about the consequences, Romeo convinced Jolyne to help him cover it up. Though she initially had the good sense to call the police Romeo managed to take advantage of Jolyne’s affections, eventually getting her to help him hide the body in the car’s trunk.

Soon after the car and body are found with only Jolyne’s fingerprints inside, which leads to her arrest and incarceration. This kicks off the events of Stone Ocean, and while it looks like a typical case of corruption, things aren’t as straightforward as they initially seem. The accident, framing Jolyne, and her subsequent arrest are all part of a plan by Johngalli A. and Pucci to get Jolyne sent to Green Dolphin Street Prison and lure in Jotaro.

The hit-and-run serves as a major catalyst for not only the begging of Part 6 but the chain of events that follow Jolyne’s incarceration. Pucci’s plan was highly dependant on drawing Jotaro in, and Jolyne – despite their rocky relationship – served as the perfect bait. Sadly, this would just be the start of Jolyne’s troubles, though her arrest, coupled with the awakening of her stand does allow her to grow considerably throughout Stone Ocean’s narrative.
