James Gunn's DCU has inspired several casting rumors, but this one about adult film star Johnny Sins playing Superman villain Lex Luthor is the strangest.

Casting for the upcoming DCU movies was taking place before the strike, and Gunn has frequently taken to social media to confirm or deny any rumors about these films. The focus has been on the first DCU film, Gunn's Superman: Legacy, which has already confirmed David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan as Superman and Lois Lane respectively. Gunn has also cast other heroes in Superman: Legacy, including Hawkgirl, Guy Gardner, Mr. Terrific, and Metamorpho, but has yet to cast a villain for the film.

This has led to a rumor that Sins will play the role of Superman's greatest nemesis Lex Luthor. Sins has become a meme in recent years due to his many different roles as a doctor, cop, firefighter, and even an astronaut. This rumor seems to have started from a parody account called Le Cinèphiles, where people had then taken it seriously and had to ask Gunn whether it was true. Gunn seemingly denied the rumor saying, “Oh my God, you can’t possibly believe that.”

Surprisingly, this isn’t the first time this rumor was spread around. In fact, when it was announced that Lex Luthor would appear in Batman v Superman, there was a similar rumor about Sins playing Luthor, which was quickly dismissed as a joke. For whatever reason, this time the rumor has gained more traction, with people believing it is true.

Some fans have pointed out that Gunn has responded to this rumor quickly and still has not responded about whether Gal Gadot will return to play Wonder Woman. Gadot recently mentioned that she would return to the role of Wonder Woman in the DCU. A different report said that she was never promised that. Gunn has yet to confirm or deny Gadot's return.

Gunn has been criticized for many of his casting choices in the past, but this would have been the strangest by far. Fans will be relieved to know that this rumor was never true in the slightest and Lex Luthor will not be played by an adult film star in Superman: Legacy. However, fans are still waiting on a response from Gunn about Gadot's future in the DCU.

Superman: Legacy is scheduled to be released in theaters on July 11, 2025.
