John Wick: Chapter 4 begins after John has taken a hiatus from killing. He spent an undisclosed amount of time healing from the injuries from the last movie along with honing his body to be even deadlier. Once he makes his presence known by executing a higher-up from The Table, assassins once again descend on this anti-hero who just wants peace.

No one wants to give that to John freely, so he once again has to rage against the machine. John Wick: Chapter 4 leaves a lot of questions on the table, but some of these unresolved mysteries and plot holes stick out much more than others.

This article contains major spoilers for John Wick: Chapter 4.

1 Is John Dead?

John in John Wick Chapter 4

This is the biggest mystery in the movie. Winston and the Bowery King go to John’s gravesite, which should be enough for audiences to assume the worst. However, John is never shown in a casket during a funeral or even shown being lowered into the ground.

Now, John suffers a lot of injuries in the movie, more so than in any of the other movies in the franchise. He falls off a balcony in the German club, and, in Paris, he gets hit by multiple cars, falls out of an even bigger balcony, falls down some stairs, and also gets those gun wounds during his dual. No one should survive all that but still, the ending to John Wick: Chapter 4 is a bit ambiguous.

2 Will Akira Kill Caine?

It’s miraculous that of all the trains in Osaka, John, and Akira appear on the same one. At the next stop, Akira warns John that Caine must be stopped. Either John has to kill Caine or she has to. It’s a threat but not necessarily toward John because even though she hates that her father sided with John, she’s angrier at Caine for killing him.

In the end credits, there is a scene that shows Akira going after Caine, showing viewers that she did not break her promise to John. Things cut to black before this match between the ninja and the blind swordsman can commence. Will this be shown in a sequel, or is Caine just to be assumed dead?

3 Who Is The Tracker?

The Tracker in John Wick Chapter 4

The Tracker has no clear name and yet he has two. John identifies him as a Tracker in Osaka, which is presumably a bounty hunter that is better at finding people than most. It might also be the reason he has a dog and the secret to how he can chase down ruthless men like John. The Tracker identifies himself as Nobody though.

Based on his attire, it seemed like he may have had ties with the Bowery King. He has the look of a street dweller. However, it’s not revealed if that was the case or not. He doesn’t get a wrap-up in John Wick: Chapter 4, unlike Caine who gets a post-credits scene. Winston gets to close things out with the Bowery King too. So, who is the Tracker and will he return?

4 What Will Become Of The High Table?

The Marquis in John Wick Chapter 4

The High Table is still as mysterious as it was in the first movie. Little facts about them and their surrounding members have been leaked throughout the series, but nothing truly concrete. The Marquis served as their stand-in to kill John by any means necessary.

The Marquis died, but so did John, so things are at a standstill now. Is The High Table satisfied with the results or will they clean up loose ends with John? Is Winston truly safe? Is the Bowery King? What about other assassins like The Tracker, Caine, and even Sofia from the third movie? The High Table could come for them at any moment.

5 Will Ballerina Show Post-John Wick: Chapter 4 Content?

Sofia is not the only character from the third movie whose whereabouts are unknown. A spinoff movie is in the works called Ballerina. It will star Ana de Armas who will be playing the titular Ballerina aka Rooney. She’ll be taking over the role of Unity Phelan who played her in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum.

It will take place between the third and fourth movies and characters like John will even appear in it. How much is uncertain. The biggest question with the movie is this: Will the Ballerina’s end showcase something after the events of John Wick: Chapter 4 to set things up for John Wick: Chapter 5 or some other spinoff?

6 The Future Of The Continental

Winston in John Wick Chapter 4

The Continental is destroyed at the beginning of John Wick: Chapter 4along with Charon. The Marquis is on a rampage to destroy everything John holds dear and yet he keeps Winston alive. That must be The Marquis’ biggest mistake as Winston helps create a plan that ultimately leads to The Marquis’ death.

Winston gets revenge for his dear friend Charon but he also gets his hotel back. Now, for those unaware, Peacock is producing a prequel TV series called The Continental. It will take place in the 70s with a young Winston and Charon leading the show. Will the show take place completely in the 70s, or will it flash-forward to a present-day Winston who is perhaps overseeing the construction of The Continental’s new building?
