Before the Peacemaker series even premiered on HBO Max, John Cena lost the helmet that his titular character wears. During an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, the actor showed up in his Peacemaker costume and participated in a hilarious competition with the host. Unfortunately, he lost, and had to pay a price in the form of his helmet.

The HBO Max series is a spin-off from director James Gunn's The Suicide Squad. Cena's Peacemaker became a fan-favorite character and fans are now looking forward to his return on the small screen. However, any possible future seasons will require the design team to create a new helmet, as Cena lost the one he currently had to Fallon.

On his Twitter account, Cena posted images of himself posing with Fallon, while the latter donned the Peacemaker helmet. “In all the years of #Peacemaker's special super-kickass superhero training, high school decathlons, and scrabble championships… defeat has never tasted so bitter,” he tweeted and congratulated Fallon for winning the challenges on the show. While the two looked happy in the photographs, a video of the competition was later shared by Fallon, which shows a dejected Cena.

In the video, Cena is seen talking about how it isn’t fun to play a game when nothing is at stake. "If you win, I’ll give you my helmet,” he tells Fallon, who is ready to take the prize home before the competition has even begun. For the first challenge, the two are handed ping pong balls, and they have to “blow it in the air for the longest.” Fallon quickly loses, making Cena even more confident about his victory, which sadly never comes.

The competition goes on to include comical challenges, such as balancing on a board while holding a tray of glasses. Cena falls off the board within a second, getting some roaring laughter going among the audience members. It’s followed by holding the high note in Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You,” hanging off of a fireman’s pole for the longest, and finally, riding a mechanical bull.

After losing the competition, Cena sticks to his word and hands over the Peacemaker helmet to Fallon. “James Gunn is going to be so mad,” he says looking completely dispirited, while Fallon seems to be having the time of his life. The video is a fun watch, and despite being an overconfident competitor, Cena was not a sour loser. He stuck to his end of the bargain, even if it meant losing an important piece of his costume. It remains to be seen how Gunn will react to the loss. The Peacemaker director, who is quite active on social media, has not said anything about the incident yet.

Peacemaker premieres on HBO Max on January 13, 2022.
