The name id Software has been a prominent one throughout the games industry since the 1990s, and still carries weight to this day. As the studio responsible for Doom and Quake, id cemented itself long ago as one of the most important development teams, particularly when it comes to laying the foundations for the modern first-person shooter. Unsurprisingly, then, the enormous company is keen to hire the best of the best, and a new job posting on the Zenimax website suggests there's likely to be a new AAA action title in the works.

At this point, there is no way to say what the game will be, but the job ad states that id Software is currently on the lookout for a "combat designer," specifically it's looking to hire someone with extensive knowledge of the Doom games, but especially the reboot and Doom Eternal. This suggests that there may be a new entry in the long-running influential series that could be coming out. However, it cannot be ruled out that the studio is also working on a follow-up to 1996's Quake, a title which made almost as big an impact on gaming when it was released as its predecessor.

Of course, this is only speculation at this stage as the advert doesn't specify, for obvious reasons, what the new recruit will be working on, but says they will be designing "high quality" game play, and building "combat spaces." Given that Zenimax was hiring for id Software in late November 2021, namely an artist and animator, there is the possibility that this could be related to a new Quake game. At the very least, it sounds like whatever project is in the pipeline will have that arena style gameplay element to it that made Doom 2016 and Eternal immediate smash hits.

Many will also remember that it wasn't long ago when Bethesda unexpectedly updated Quake to a remastered version, which came with some graphical tweaks, the re-implementation of one of John Romero's original level designs, and seemingly putting the haunting Nine Inch Nails soundtrack back in. Given the huge success of the Doom reboot, the chance to see a modern reimagining of the developer's gothic FPS follow-up will no doubt be exciting for many.

Both Doom and Quake are considered some of the best FPS games of the 1990s, perhaps even of all time. While the former established id Software as a gaming force to be reckoned with, the latter continued to push the genre forward into darker and perhaps even more mature territories. Whatever this elusive combat designer will be working on, fans will be keen to keep an ear out for any updates on the nameless project or projects.
