When news broke in January 2022 that actor Jason Momoa would be joining the cast of the highly anticipated Fast and Furious 10, it was reported that he would be playing the new villain. Now, we have official confirmation from the Aquaman star himself that he will indeed be playing the next villain in the long-running action franchise.

Momoa, who's known for playing tough-guy characters such Duncan Idaho in last year's Dune, seems like a perfect fit for the Fast and Furious franchise. Previous villains include criminal mastermind Deckard Shaw (#JusticeForHan), who's played by British action star Jason Statham, and before his highly publicized falling out with leading man Vin Diesel, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson was introduced to the franchise as an antagonist in Fast Five. The most recent entry of the franchise saw Peacemaker star John Cena portraying Dom's estranged evil brother, Jakob Toretto.

Momoa recently spoke to Entertainment Tonight at the red carpet premiere of the latest DC and Warner Bros. film, The Batman. Momoa was attending the premiere in support of his step-daughter Zoe Kravitz, who plays Selina Kyle/Catwoman in the new film. Speaking to ET about his new role, Momoa said, "I'm gonna go do 'Fast 10,' that's gonna be fun ... it's fun, I get to play the bad guy, which I haven't gotten to do for a while. Now, I get to be the bad boy. A very flamboyant bad boy."

Early reports of the role also stated that Momoa would be joining the Fast and Furious franchise as a character who is "protagonistic or antagonistic in nature, or perhaps even both." This is also fitting to the nature of these films, as many of the previous villains have joined up with the heroes, including Deckard Shaw and The Rock's character Luke Hobbs. Who exactly Momoa will be playing is unknown at the moment, but maybe it's another long-lost relative with an axe to grind? That being said, it's very exciting that Momoa describes the character as a "very flamboyant bad boy." The Fast and Furious films are known for their soap opera storylines and melodramatic elements such as long-lost siblings and tragic romances in between the franchises high-octane action.

As Momoa also mentioned, this is new territory for the actor, as he is often cast as heroes. Momoa is perhaps most recognized for his role as Aquaman in the DCEU. He first played the aquatic superhero in 2016's Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, and since then he's gone on to reprise the role in several DC and Warner Bros. projects, including Zack Snyder's Justice League and his own solo film in 2018. Momoa will once again reprise the role of Aquaman in the upcoming sequel, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which is set to premiere in theaters on December 16th 2022.

Fast & Furious 10 is currently scheduled to premiere in theaters on May 19th, 2023.
