DC fans have appeared to receive an answer regarding the role of Wonder Woman in the DCU. The answer was provided by none other than head of the DCU James Gunn himself. In a Twitter reply, Gunn shed light on what exactly was happening with the iconic superhero following Wonder Woman and Wonder Woman 1984.

Wonder Woman, one of the most iconic superheroes, and an important figurehead in comic book history for the representation of female superheroes, first appeared on the big screen in 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Gal Gadot starred in Wonder Woman the next year, the DCEU’s first female-led superhero film, and the first female-led superhero film in totality for over a decade (also beating the MCU to that achievement). It was well-received both critically and in its box office performance, earning over $824 million.

Gotham Knights Developer Reportedly Working on Upcoming Wonder Woman Game

A new job listing reveals that Gotham Knights studio WB Games Montreal is assisting Monolith Productions with its upcoming Wonder Woman game.

In a tweet from Twitter user DCFilmNews, a screenshot was provided chronicling James Gunn’s curt response to one such fan curious about the future of Wonder Woman. Asking about the upcoming DCU project Creature Commandos, the fan asked Gunn about rumors of Wonder Woman appearing in the project, and if the part had not been cast yet. Gunn simply replied “correct,” seemingly confirming that Wonder Woman is being recast for his vision of the DC universe. However, the one-word reply does leave the possibility open that Gadot could be the actor cast in the role, as Gunn did not directly confirm that the role would go to a new actor. However, judging by the trajectory of the DCU, it would not be a surprise to learn that a new actor will take up the mantle.

After the DCEU all but crashed and burned after a long, contentious saga during which it was often widely acknowledged by many that Disney’s MCU was eating its lunch, Warner Bros made a decision that surprised many, but in retrospect, makes complete, logical sense. The DCEU was out and James Gunn was appointed as the new head of fostering the transition from DC comics to the silver screen. Fittingly, the DCEU was rebranded the DCU. Despite keeping some actors from the DCEU that were too valuable to let go (like Viola Davis as Amanda Waller), Gunn has made some sweeping changes, chief among these discarding Henry Cavill’s Superman in favor of a fresh new face. Until it was just made official, many fans assumed Gadot would not be returning to the role of Wonder Woman either, but did not know for sure.

Gunn himself has apparently put the rumor to rest. As someone who will be a part of handpicking the new face of Wonder Woman, Gunn has a lot riding on his shoulders. Despite this, Gunn’s history with the wildly successful Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, as well as his faithful The Suicide Squad adaptation, shows that Gunn respects the characters’ comic roots and will hopefully make a great decision. Time will tell if Gunn will help to craft a Wonder Woman that will electrify the zeitgeist like Wonder Woman (2017) once did.
