Marvel Studios had some exciting announcements to share at the San Diego Comic-Con over the weekend. As part of its panels, the studio gave the Hall H attendees a sneak peek at the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in an exclusive teaser trailer. However, the trailer has not been released online yet, and fans of the franchise are not too pleased, so director James Gunn offered an explanation.

The Guardians of the Galaxy have not appeared in a standalone project since 2017, and fans are looking forward to seeing their favorite heroes return for another adventure. When news of the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 trailer being showcased at the Comic-Con broke, fans expected it to be released online as well, similar to the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and other trailers. However, they were left feeling disappointed. At least they now know why they didn’t get to see it.

After noticing that the trailer hadn't been released online, one fan tweeted to Gunn saying, “wish we all could've experienced the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 trailer yesterday.” He attached a GIF of a sad Baby Groot to prove a point. He then praised Gunn's “space opera work,” and expressed how “truly sad” he was that the studio held back the trailer from the fans who truly care. Gunn, who is known for being extremely active on social media, replied within a few minutes and revealed that the trailer wasn’t up to the mark for “repeated views.”

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 wrapped filming in May 2022, and the post-production work is currently underway. Gunn explained to fans that it wasn’t just the studio’s decision to hold back the trailer, but it was also his. “Although I love the teaser, some VFX aren’t where I’d want them to be for repeated views and close inspection - remember we didn’t wrap long ago - so you’ll have to wait just a beat! Sorry,” he tweeted. Seems like a genuine reason, but fans weren’t ready to accept it just yet. His tweet garnered a lot of reaction from fans, with most asking when the trailer would premiere for wider viewing.

The Guardians of the Galaxy have been an integral part of the Avengers for the past few years. They’ve appeared in films like Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, Thor: Love and Thunder, and will also be seen in The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special soon. With their next standalone project arriving next year, there’s still time for fans to feast their eyes on trailers, exclusive clips, posters, and perhaps even some spoilers.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is scheduled to premiere in theaters on May 5, 2023.
