James Cameron can't help but tease more details about the subsequent Avatar sequels. His revelation this time around: each new Avatar film will have a different narrator.
Avatar: The Way of Water has secured enough money to keep the Avatar sequels coming. Now that Avatar: The Way of Water is the 6th highest-grossing film of all time (as of this writing), Cameron essentially has carte blanche to do whatever he wants with the franchise, and it looks like Cameron is aiming for ambitious plotlines and films.
Cameron was interviewed on Soundtracking With Edith Bowman, where he spoke about his plans for the Avatar franchise. He mentioned going back and "fine-tuning" what people liked about the first two films. It was then that he accidentally dropped a spoiler. "For example, Lo’ak really emerged as a character that people went with, so I might find ways to sort of - now he’s already the narr - Oh, I’m giving away something here," Cameron said. "Every - every one of the Avatars - but this is okay. I think this is intriguing for people to think about what’s coming. Jake was our voice-over narrator for movie 1 and for movie 2, and we have a different narrator for each of the subsequent films. We see it through the eyes of a different character. And movie 3 is through Lo’ak’s eyes.”
Avatar: The Way of Water cemented Pandora as one of the most iconic fictional planets. Its biomes are beautiful and fully realized, and Cameron has mentioned that there's much more to see on the moon. It makes sense that the diversity of the characters would play a key role when exploring the rest of Pandora (and beyond).
With Avatar 5 bringing the Na'vi to Earth, the film could feature Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) as its narrator. Producer Jon Landau has said that the crew would like to explore Neytiri's prejudice towards humans in greater depth, and having a Na'vi be the central character during this installment would be the perfect way to bring the franchise full circle. Jake's (Sam Worthington) narration was a human point of view exploring an alien landscape, while Neytiri's would be an alien point of view exploring a human landscape.
Saldaña also teased Neytiri's negative feelings towards humans in Avatar: The Way of Water would be important to her overall character arc. Neytiri may start thinking all humans are greedy and brutal until she encounters the put-upon lower classes on Earth and sees the RDA is making humanity suffer. It would certainly fit into the film's themes.
Avatar: The Way of Water is now in theaters.
