Highlights

  • Jak and Daxter fans may finally get their wish for a new game or movie adaptation, but the rumored casting choices may disappoint some.
  • Tom Holland and Chris Pratt are being considered for the roles of Jak and Daxter, respectively, in a live-action movie directed by Ruben Fleischer.
  • While some fans are excited about the potential project, others are tired of seeing Holland and Pratt in every major film and suggest considering other actors for the roles.

The Jak and Daxter series could have a shot at finally busting its way out of obscurity and back to the mainstream, except with the possible caveat of some shockingly predictable casting choices.

Naughty Dog's beloved Jak and Daxter 3D platformer series lives on in the hearts of fans, but it's been quite some time since a new game has graced the physical and digital shelves of Playstation's library. Not only has their dark and creative post-apocalyptic The Last of Us franchise proved to be a massive success for several PlayStation consoles (along with a slow drip onto PC as well), but the HBO series adaptation of the games has similarly taken its entertainment medium by storm. That's not to mention their still popular Crash Bandicoot games (albeit now under a new developer) and Indiana Jones-inspired Uncharted action/adventure series, the latter of which saw its movie adaptation. Still, none of that has done anything to tamp down the optimism from fans that Jak and Daxter may still return one day.

Thanks to a Twitter post from industry insider MyTimeToShineHello, those hungry fans may finally see something to whet their appetites. The leaker, who has a decent track record for this sort of thing, revealed the possibility of a movie based on the fan-favorite game series. However, that's not all. "Tom Holland to play Jak, Chris Pratt eyed to voice Daxter in live action Jak and Daxter movie from Sony directed by Ruben Fleischer (Venom, Uncharted)," the tweet reads. To some fans, this may feel like a particularly cruel monkey's paw just curled a finger.

Current Spider-Man star Holland and Guardians of the Galaxy's Pratt seem to be everywhere these days. Pratt infamously voiced Mario in the recent and hugely popular Super Mario Bros. Movie, which is only the latest entry in the actor's extensive resume. Meanwhile, Holland has some experience with Naughty Dog properties, as he took the lead role as Nathan Drake in Fleischer's Uncharted movie. So this wouldn't be the first video game-related project for either actor. But many fans still feel a bit burnt out on the two stars, with one user on ResetEra responding with an exasperated, "oh my god there are other actors in Hollywood."

The original Jak and Daxter game follows the titular duo as the former looks for a way to change back his buddy Daxter from being transformed into a fuzzy little creature known as an ottsel. As simple a premise as that is, things get unexpectedly dark in future games, with Jak and Daxter (the latter still in ottsel form after the first adventure didn't go quite as planned) traveling to an oppressive city and battling everything from an invading army of monsters to political corruption. Many fans didn't like the dark themes of subsequent games after Jak and Daxter, while others embraced the new style.

So assuming this rumor is true, it's unclear whether it will purely follow the events of the first game or try to mash things together from throughout the series. However, since it hasn't been officially confirmed, Jak and Daxter fans should take this info with a hefty grain of salt. One thing is sure, Daxter had better make fun of Jak every time he dies, like a good friend.
