The Game Awards for 2020 is premiering this December 10th and will show off plenty of new games players can look forward to playing next year and beyond. Among the games announced for the upcoming Game Awards is a new title made by the developer behind the co-op game A Way Out.

According to a tweet by Geoff Keighley, The Game Awards will have Josef Fares presenting new gameplay for Hazelight Studios's upcoming It Takes Two this Thursday. Fares previously made an appearance on 2017 The Game Awards to show gameplay for the game A Way Out. This will be the second time he does so as he shows Hazelight's new game to players everywhere.

This past June, PlayStation released a video where Fares shared the core details about Hazelight's new game, It Takes Two. He said it is a co-op, action-adventure platformer. The premise is a small family is going through a divorce as the two parents, Cody and May, are separating. However, their daughter Rose made two dolls, and her parents' minds are magically transported into the dolls. Players will play as both parents and will work together to escape back to their real bodies.

Hazelight's co-op gameplay focus shines through in this premise. The inherent emotional drama lines up with A Way Out's co-op adventure. In that game, the main characters Leo & Vincent are prisoners who escape prison and go on a journey to return to their respective lives. The drama stemmed from their past histories' baggage and the conflict that they're strangers trying to work together and learn to trust each other.

It Takes Two goes in the opposite direction, as its characters were married, and their past will likely be a source of emotional drama. Fares and Hazelight make sure the game demands co-op gameplay as the developer's past game was. These parents have to work together similar to another game Fares directed, Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons. In that game, two brothers set out to find a cure for their ailing father, and the young siblings rely on each other to make it through their journey.

The story carries over into the gameplay as players have to help each other make it through obstacles and overcome challenges they otherwise couldn't on their own. The new game will be no different and have extensive co-op gameplay as well. Fares stated that a goal for Hazelight's It Takes Two is to marry story and gameplay mechanics together. Players will be able to see this for themselves on The Game Awards this Thursday.

It Takes Two is in development for PC, PS4, and Xbox One and will release in 2021.
