Ever since Community ended in 2015, fans have heard about a potential Community movie. Since the TV series changed networks before the final season, it seemed like anything was possible. After seasons 1 through 5 aired on NBC, season 6 aired on Yahoo! Screen. The Community Movie Is Officially Happening
Good news for fans of the unique and quirky sitcom: the Community movie is happening and creator Dan Harmon has shared an update about the script. Harmon told Variety:
“I can confirm Donald Glover’s report that I told him the script was done, but I will also say Donald’s sources are so unreliable because the script is always ‘almost done. What can I tell you about it — it’s set on the campus of Greendale Community College. I’m super excited about it, and we’re almost done.”
Harmon referred to an interview that Donald Glover, who played Troy Barnes, gave in late January 2024. The actor told Entertainment Tonight:
"I was told that the script -- literally, I was texting today -- I was told that the script was done... I haven't read it yet,"
Glover added that he definitely wants to be in the Community movie: "It's really just a schedule thing [but] I'm in. I'm all in."

Harmon added in his interview with Variety that he has felt nostalgic while writing the Community movie. Given the many hilarious Community parody episodes and the bond between the characters, fans feel the same way. Harmon said, “I’ve been having kind of a nervous breakdown the last couple of months just by working on it." He continued:
"and that’s a good thing because I’m having all kinds of flashbacks to 2009. It’s gonna be awesome. I’m like, ‘Why am I crying about these characters?'”
For several years now, the cast of Community has answered questions about the Community movie, and they often say that they are looking forward to it. However, until know, there haven't been any concrete details. In February 2023, Danny Pudi, who played Abed Nadir, told Variety, “it looks likely this year. Right now, it’s just the timing.” Alison Brie, who played Annie Edison, told the publication, "I'm clearing that schedule."
Also in February 2023, Brie told The A.V. Club about the Community movie, "We are allegedly shooting it this summer, is the most that I know." She continued, "I do believe that the Community movie will get made. It’s been sold—to Peacock! But because of everything we went through on that show… I’ll believe it when I see it. It’s not until I’m on set that I’ll be like, ‘We’re making it!’"
Fan Theories About The Community Movie
Fans have been thinking about what the Community movie could be about for a long time. Redditor @RandallHicks asked what others think that the Community movie's main plot should be in a Reddit thread. The fan wrote:
"some sort of murder mystery style. Maybe something like the dean has been killed and the gang is forced to solve his murder by rejoining forces. And just when hope seems lost, Troy returns to save the day. Lastly, and I may get flak for this, but I hope we see romance again between Annie and Jeff."
Several fans think the Community movie should be about a reunion between the characters. This would allow the popular characters in Community to have a reason to be at Greendale again, now that some time has passed since they were originally bonding and having fun in the study room and classrooms. Redditor @m_dought_2 said, "Jeff organizing some sort of reunion (which is exactly what Joel McHale did with the cast). I hope it just feels like a really long episode of Community. Nothing too out of the box."
