Kevin Edwards, a former developer at X2: Wolverine’s Revenge studio Genepool Software, just revealed images and secrets from a canceled Iron Man game he was working on. Tony Stark and his high-tech alter-ego are a natural fit for video games, and the metal-suited Avenger has been playable in various Marvel titles over the years. Iron Man’s virtual outings have ranged from supporting roles in the Marvel vs. Capcom games and Crystal Dynamics’ ill-fated Marvel’s Avengers to solo games like Iron Man VR and Sega’s not-so-fondly remembered Iron Man movie tie-ins.

More recently, Dead Space remake developer EA Motive is working on a new Iron Man game that EA is publishing alongside a Cliffhanger Games-developed Black Panther title and a third, yet unrevealed Marvel project. However, before EA Motive’s Iron Man game was revealed to the world, Just Cause developer Avalanche Studios had its own Iron Man title in the works, though it was ultimately canceled for unknown reasons. As it turns out, there was yet another unreleased video game starring the one and only Tony Stark, and it would have been made by the same studio behind the underappreciated 2003 movie tie-in X2: Wolverine’s Revenge.

EA's Iron Man Game Might Not Be Just an Iron Man Game

There isn't much known about EA's planned Iron Man game, but it's possible that there is far more in store than the title suggests.

Kevin Edwards, who was working at Genepool Software at the time that X2: Wolverine’s Revenge was hitting store shelves, recently shared images of a canceled Iron Man game that his team was working on. According to him, this game was to be titled “The Invincible Iron Man,” and it would have apparently featured Tony in a suit inspired by the Ultimate Marvel comics of the early 2000s. Edwards also shared Xbox demo footage of the armored hero testing his weapons in a desert while on a mission to take down a robot manufacturing plant.

X2: Wolverine’s Revenge Developer Was Working on an Iron Man Game

The project wasn’t to be though, as Edwards revealed that publisher Activision ultimately shelved The Invincible Iron Man without explanation after about five or six months. Genepool Software itself was shut down shortly afterward, leaving Edwards and his team out of work. He shared some theories about why the game was canceled in a Twitter thread, stating that it could have been due to an unproduced Iron Man movie being delayed or another developer being eyed for the project.

Whatever the reason, Genepool Software’s The Invincible Iron Man never saw the light of day, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe would revitalize the character in its own way just a few years later. Kevin Edwards says that he has a demo of the game working on an Xbox emulator, and promises to reveal more footage of this canceled Iron Man title as soon as he gets better at its controls.
