The controversial Ion Fury, a game made by and for fans of Duke Nukem 3D, has been extremely well received within the niche of retro first-person shooter fans. It's now been close to two years since Ion Fury was released, however, and many players have been wondering when developer Voidpoint will deliver more. The answer, it seems, is soon. Today publisher 3D Realms and Voidpoint revealed Aftershock, a major DLC expansion coming to Ion Fury summer 2021.

All that's known about Aftershock can be seen in the DLC's newly released trailer. Protagonist Shelly is back and she's got a host of weapons and toys to take down armies of whatever steps in her way. Main antagonist Professor Jadus Heskel, voiced by Duke Nukem voice actor Jon St. John, also is said to be returning. The trailer teases that Shelly will finally take Heskel "down for good" in Aftershock. What surprises lay in store remain to be discovered.

Ion Fury fans have known that an expansion for the game is in development since this past year. 3D Realms announced during its Realms Deep event that Voidpoint was working on more Ion Fury content. A teaser trailer was then released just before the new year. This is the official first confirmation of the Aftershock expansion and its release window, however. It's possible that little has been shown of Aftershock in order to avoid a similar controversy Ion Fury faced at launch over the inclusion of bigoted jokes that the dev team publicly refused to self-censor.

There's lots more tentatively planned from 3D Realms in 2021 beyond Ion Fury: Aftershock. Slipgate Ironworks' fantasy FPS Graven is planned for 2021, as is Ivar Hill's first-person RPG Core Decay and the remastered version of SiN. 2021 has the opportunity to be 3D Realms' new renaissance era.

Ion Fury is available now on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
