Four years since its launch, Into the Breach still has a lot to offer with its randomly-generated challenges and mod support. Now, a new update will give veteran players even more weapons and pilots to save humanity with.Subset Games is known for its challenging and unique strategy games, with its breakout hit FTL: Faster Than Light in 2012 capturing the attention of many. The critically-acclaimed Into the Breach is a similar flavor of difficult, but switches to turn-based strategy from FTL's real-time gameplay.RELATED: Tactics Ogre: Reborn Accidentally Leaks Early on PlayStation StoreThe free Advanced Edition update for Into the Breach follows a similar format to FTL's advanced edition, building on the foundations to expand the gameplay in non-invasive ways. Specifically, several new units, weapons, pilots and enemies are being added. Given the game's interesting take on movement and physical presence in a turn-based strategy setting, the new units will most likely provide even more ways to push enemies around the map.

The Advanced Edition is far from the only announcement. Into the Breach will also be available on mobile devices starting July 19, but only for Netflix subscribers. Having a strategy game like Into the Breach on a mobile device is a great choice, but locking it behind a subscription service may be frustrating for fans of Subset Games that are not already subscribed to Netflix. However, its presence on the service could introduce the game to an entirely new audience, which could work well for it in the long run.

Alongside the Advanced Edition announcement, Subset Games also revealed that Into the Breach will finally have a physical edition via Fangamer. Considering the disproportionately low amount of indie games that receive physical releases, Into the Breach joining the ones that do even four years after release is a testament to its staying power, probably due in part to its randomized levels and unique take on strategy. The physical version of Into the Breach will even include a physical manual, which is a rarity in modern games due to digital manuals or reliance on in-game tutorials.

Not everything about Into the Breach: Advanced Edition is revealed yet, but when the update releases it will provide a great reason to revisit the game, much like how FTL gained a second life through its Advanced Edition. Tactical strategy games are falling into a niche recently, but still have a lot to offer for players willing to learn how to play them well.

Into the Breach is available for Mobile, PC, and Switch. The Advanced Edition releases on July 19.
