A reputable tech insider has revealed more details about the upcoming Intel Lunar Lake CPU lineup, including a notable 50% performance boost over previous generation Meteor Lake mobile processors. Leaks and speculation suggest that the new Lunar Lake CPUs from Intel will launch by the end of 2024 alongside Arrow Lake.

Specifications for an Intel Lunar Lake sample were leaked back in February, confirming an 8 core and 8 thread configuration for the new MX platform. Four of the cores are performance cores based on the Lion Cove microarchitecture, while the other four are efficiency cores based on the Skymont microarchitecture. The new Lunar Lake MX processors are expected to feature Battlemage Xe2-LPG GPU cores, presenting an opportunity for a major increase in performance on new handheld gaming devices and low-power laptops.

A new retail listing suggests that the upcoming Intel Core i9-14900KS CPU will cost more than the previous generation i9-13900KS.

Reported by tech insider Bionic_Squash on Twitter and Videocardz.com, Intel Lunar Lake will bring a 50% performance boost compared to Meteor Lake, despite a decrease in the overall core count from 12 to 8 for the newer chips. Bionic_Squash claims that Lunar Lake chips can achieve this performance boost in multithreaded applications like Cinebench 5.4.5 at 17W, which is two watts higher than Meteor Lake's 15W CPUs. The TDP for Lunar Lake is expected to go up to 30W, offering potential single core and multicore performance gains over Meteor Lake on new Intel-powered laptops. If leaks regarding Intel's plans for Lunar Lake hold true, 8W fanless power designs for Lunar Lake will also be produced. The fanless design will likely be used in ultra-thin laptops, which are often ideal for browsing, school work, and other light work loads.

Intel Lunar Lake Leak Suggests 50% Multithreaded Performance Boost

Intel did not officially confirm specs and official details for Lunar Lake yet, but Bionic_Squash's claim appears to reinforce Intel's leaked preliminary plans for the new CPUs. The performance uplift on Lunar Lake is promising for gaming on low-powered devices as well. However, PC gamers may need to wait for more details about low-powered versions of Intel's Battlemage Xe2 GPUs in order to get a clearer picture of Lunar Lake's gaming performance.

Lunar Lake is expected to launch by the end of 2024, with volume production ramping up in 2025. New Intel Arrow Lake CPUs will be released alongside Lunar Lake with the same microarchitecture, but Arrow Lake will target mid-range and high-end hardware, such as gaming laptops. Arrow Lake may be a solid option for users needing hardware that's capable of completing productivity tasks on the go.
