Marvel's Spider-Man's release in 2018 was followed with a mass amount of praise, with many fans showing appreciation for the game's traversal, story, and combat. Players saw the same features in Insomniac Games' addition of Marvel's Spider-ManMiles Morales in 2020. With the studio's recent reveals of a Spider-Man sequel and the new IP in Wolverine, fans have another reason to be excited about the future of Insomniac's titles.

Despite any confirmation of an official release date, the anticipation for this project continues to increase. For Insomniac to top their previous releases, there are a few features within gameplay and story that require some tweaks and changes.

7 Mature Rating

WOLVERINE CLAWS

Fans who are familiar with the character will be aware of the nature in which he takes on enemies. Considering the type of power Logan obtains, it would be unrealistic for there to be a lack of mature themes or scenes within the game.

Although this has been done within the movies and has proven to be successful, many players will be hoping for an addition of the R rating for this title. It is still unconfirmed whether this will be the case, but Insomniac's creative director stated the game will have a "full size, mature tone" possibly hinting toward an R-rated title.

6 Expanded Combat System

Spider Man Combat

Spider-Man obtains a much less aggressive nature in comparison to Wolverine given the type of character he is, which resulted in the combat within Insomniac's game as more than acceptable for many players. This is one of the key and core elements that must be changed to a more brutal one, whilst also adding a whole new set of moves for players.

Not only will this serve the purpose of fitting in with the character of Wolverine, but it will also please fans to see a new addition on top of the groundwork Insomniac has already delivered previously, which would make for a whole new experience.

5 Grounded Realistic Story

Wolverine Story Cutscenes

One of the traits which hold Insomniac Games up to such high regard is their storytelling, particularly the story in Spider-Man. Fans familiar with the story of Peter Parker may have expected the same storyline of the death of Uncle Ben. But the events of the game cover the long aftermath of the fact, with Peter having new stakes and people to save.

If Insomniac intends to make an original story with an element of positive surprise for fans, a great and brand-new story will be integral to allowing players route for Logan as they control the character, but also adhere to a more grounded and realistic take on the matter.

4 Cameos And References

Stan Lee in Insomniac's Spider-Man

With a plethora of Marvel characters at their disposal, Insomniac has the opportunity to double down on the idea of cameos and references as fans will have already seen in Spider-Man. From the main man and the creator of Marvel Stan Lee, The Avengers, Daredevil, to Black Panther, and many more, players will be aware of them and the possibility of a potential future title or cameo.

As Wolverine is now in production, Insomniac now has free rein over whether a full-on cameo or introduction to another Marvel character is necessary. With Wolverine's role in the X-Men, the chances of this happening are high.

3 Longer Story

Spider Man Fighting

All good things must come to an end, and that is certainly how many fans felt after the completion of Spider-Man. This may not have necessarily been a complaint, but some players would have loved a longer runtime, to the point where it does not overstay its welcome. Despite this, Insomniac was able to provide three extra DLCs for players to dive into after the main story.

To elevate the new IP to that next level, a longer runtime or an introduction to an RPG-like leveling system may keep players around much longer. This must have a balance to it and should serve a purpose.

2 Less Character Switching

Mary Jane

One of the more disliked sections of Spider-Man was the sudden breakaway moments which put players in the control of Mary Jane and Miles Morales, taking a much stealthier approach. This happens multiple times within the game, much to players' displeasure considering the amount of fast-paced action was under their control previously.

With Wolverine, this is much less likely to be a feature that will be a positive for fans, but there will be no way of confirming this until more information is revealed. In the meantime, many will continue to hope for a full-fledged Wolverine experience, giving them more time in control of the character.

1 Bigger Map

Spider Man Map

As the current map in Spider-Man contains a great number of activities, buildings, side missions, and crime alerts for players to explore, Insomniac did a great job in providing an experience to keep players sticking around in the long run. This includes the presence of New Game Plus, giving fans another chance to explore whilst obtaining all the suits and abilities unlocked previously.

An expanded map within Wolverine could go hand in hand with the need to extend the game's runtime, whilst also allowing Insomniac to add even more activities, side missions, and whatever combat scenarios the game may hold in its context. Fans will be pleased to see an extensive map, based on the praise seen for games such as Red Dead Redemption 2 or Grand Theft Auto 5.

Marvel's Wolverine is currently in development for PS5.
