DC FanDome is set to begin on October 16, with several high-profile movies and comics set to be there. It’ll also be a good time for video games, as both Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League and Gotham Knights are expected to be there. In fact, Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League recently released new key art in anticipation of the event. But there are many fans hoping that one more popular DC game will be there: Injustice 3.

While there are always fans hoping for an Injustice 3 announcement, a recent confirmation has added fuel to that fire. DC Comics recently released a new promo for the event, naming NetherRealm Studios creative director Ed Boon as one of its attendees. Fans have quickly connected the dots, hoping his confirmation here is evidence that an Injustice 3 reveal is inbound.

Of course, this could very well prove to be the case. If Ed Boon is there to make a video game announcement or at least be involved in one, then it wouldn’t make sense for it to be anything but Injustice 3. However, fans should take this with a grain of salt for a couple of reasons. First off, Ed Boon attended the event last year too. Many jumped to the conclusion that it would be announced then too, but the only comment Boon made on Injustice 3 was that there was “nothing to announce.”

Furthermore, there have been reports that NetherRealm Studio’s next game is Mortal Kombat 12, not Injustice 3. Mortal Kombat 11 is officially done in terms of content, which does suggest the studio is likely focusing on its next game. While Injustice 3 seems to be the next in line, so to speak, reports indicate NRS is working on Mortal Kombat 12 instead due to some concerns and uncertainties with the WarnerMedia-Discovery merger. With this in mind, it does seem most likely that Ed Boon is just part of some panel as he was last year, as NRS’ next game is currently uncertain.

That said, with how long the aforementioned merger has been in the works, it’s possible that the immediate and forthcoming impact of the merger has already been outlined. It could be that NetherRealm Studios is indeed working on Injustice 3, and it could be that Ed Boon is at DC FanDome to help deliver on a triple-threat of DC games: Suicide Squad, Gotham Knights, and Injustice. Fans should keep their expectations in check nonetheless.

Injustice 3 is not confirmed to be in development.
