Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is the fifth movie in the franchise. It has been quite a while since the last adventure both in the real world and in the context of this franchise’s timeline. Indiana Jones is about to retire as a history professor and archaeologist.

After celebrating alone in a bar, he comes across Helena Shaw, his goddaughter, who pleads for his help in finding the Antikythera. That is the titular “Dial of Destiny” that this movie is chasing. Also, there are Nazis after it. That’s the basic plot of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.

WARNING! Spoilers ahead.

8 “Too Many Nazis!”

Young Indy in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

One of the best things about Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is that it brings back Nazis to the franchise. They are one of the few groups in history that are okay to hate be it in a game or movie. Just hearing Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones say the word should bring nostalgia tears to hardcore fans.

His best utterance is in the flashback scene aboard the train wherein Indy stumbles into a car with over a dozen soldiers. It’s a much better line than saying “Uh oh” or “Oops, wrong door” or something in that realm of comedy.

7 “You Didn’t Win The War, Hitler Lost It.”

Young Voller in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

Jurgen Voller, the big bad of the movie, says this line to a waiter in his hotel room. The audience can tell he has a thing against this waiter because of his race. The Nazis were all about cleansing the Earth of groups that didn’t fall into their idea of a master race.

While he doesn’t come out and say it, this line implies a certain context. The fact that Voller cannot accept defeat is a reason why he is a good movie villain thanks to Mads Mikkelsen’s performance.

6 “Wouldn’t You?”

When Helena explains that she is exploring her father’s research into the Antikythera, Indy is bewildered by her dedication to chase after a father’s dream. That’s when she says this line back at him. There is a pause and a glint in Indy’s eye as if he is having a flashback.

At this moment he is realizing that he did the same thing with his father’s obsession in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Even though Helena and Indy are not related, it is clear that sometimes the apple doesn’t far from the Godfather Tree as it were.

5 “I Miss Waking Up Every Morning Wondering What Wonderful Adventure The New Day Will Bring To Us.”

Sallah in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

This was one of the lines that undercut the first teaser for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. It was said by Sallah in the teaser trailer along with in the movie. Before sending Indy off, Sallah reminiscences about the good old days in Egypt.

At first, it seems like he is going to accompany him but Indy quickly turns Sallah down. Indy knows that Sallah has a richer life with family and he cannot risk putting Sallah in danger which is a sweet sentiment.

4 “I Don’t Need A Morality Lesson From An Aging Grave Robber!”

Helena in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

It’s clear when Helena betrays Indy initially that they are two different types of adventurers. Indy is partly in it for the thrill of discovery but he also wants to bring history back to the people. That’s why he always says something to the equivalent of “it belongs in a museum” throughout the series.

Helena, on the other hand, is in it for the money but she doesn’t see the difference between herself and Indy. That’s why she shouts this line at him as they are chasing down the Antikythera.

3 “A Few Times In My Life I’ve Seen Things.”

The full quote is much longer and it’s more of a mini-speech than a quote. While Indy doesn’t want to believe in science fiction, he cannot deny the amazing things he has seen throughout his life via the movies. It’s kind of like Han Solo’s speech about Jedi and the Force in Star Wars Episode 7: The Force Awakens.

He explains this to Helena on the boat before the big dive the next morning. It’s as if to say Indy is finally ready to admit that perhaps the Antikythera really does hold some power inside of it.

2 “You’ve Never Been Forced To Drink The Blood Of Kali.”

The boat speech is not the only time Indy tells Helena about his past adventures. He brings up events from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom as well when they are climbing the ruins where Archimedes is buried in.

Indy cannot fathom why he is there at that moment climbing a rock wall as an old man who has been through hell and back. It’s a great joke for one of the series’ most divisive entries. The fact that Helena doesn’t get it makes the joke hit harder in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.

1 “The Kind That Believes In The Dream.”

Voller in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

Voller is not satisfied with bringing the Nazi party back as it was during World War 2. This whole time he was staging a coup d'état to kill Hitler and to guide the Nazis to victory. “What kind of Nazi are you?” That’s the retort Indy gives to Voller after his plan is revealed.

Voller then simply responds with this line about believing the dream. It’s as if to say a true Nazi would carry on with the mission even if it meant killing a comrade for the greater good of Germany. It’s another reason why Voller is a great villain.
