A new magazine cover gives fans a first look at Harrison Ford's reprisal of his iconic role in Indiana Jones 5, due out next year.

Ford established the role of Indiana Jones in Steven Spielberg's Raiders of the Lost Ark, in which an American archeologist goes on a quest to save a mysterious medieval Christian relic from Nazi control. The film was followed by several successful sequels, including Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984), Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989), and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008). Indiana Jones 5 has been widely celebrated as a return to the role for Ford.

Empire Magazine's newest issue will give an in-depth interview with Ford and new shots from Indiana Jones 5, which fans have been eagerly awaiting since news of the fifth installment surfaced. In the issue, Ford joins others involved in the project for commentary, including director James Mangold and a cast that includes Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Mads Mikkelsen, Shaunette Renée Wilson and Boyd Holbrook. Also look for commentary from writers Jez and John-Henry Butterworth and producers Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall, and Simon Emanuel. The new issue of Empire also includes an alternate subscriber cover with an image of Indy amidst a 1960s-style backdrop of New York City illustrated exclusively for Empire by Sam Hadley, giving us hints of the possible settings for the upcoming film.

Ford, who celebrated his 80th birthday this past July, is found on-screen less and less in recent years, making his return as Indy especially exciting for fans of the franchise and his iconic character. While the official title has not been revealed just yet, Ford will return in Indiana Jones 5 with his dash of wry wit that has established each film as a high adventure romp with an ample dose of comedy. “It’s full of adventure, full of laughs, full of real emotion. And it’s complex and it’s sneaky,” Ford said. “The shooting of it was tough and long and arduous. But I’m very happy with the film that we have.”

The first Indiana Jone 5 trailer is believed to premiere within the next month, so these new images should tide over eager fans until then. Ford has already said this will be his final adventure as Indy, so the build-up to the fifth chapter of the franchise will likely be bittersweet.

Indiana Jones 5 is scheduled to be released in theatres on June 30, 2023.
