When Ascendant Studios’ spell-slinging shooter, Immortals of Aveum, was first announced, many gamers didn’t know quite what to make of the unorthodox blend of the FPS and fantasy genres. As more details were released it became evident that the developers hoped to give gamers the sort of cinematic shooter experience they’ve become familiar with in recent years, albeit delivered with a decidedly Doctor Strange-esque coat of paint. At the center of the game’s sprawling tale of mysticism and political intrigue lies the kingdom of Lucium’s Order of Immortals, a thrilling mash-up of magical warriors and elite commandos tasked with taking down the Tyrant of Rasharn, Sandrakk.

Led by the no-nonsense General Kirkan, played to perfection by TV, film, and video game veteran Gina Torres, the Order of Immortals is an elite group of powerful magic users in service to the kingdom of Lucium. Though their order once had thousands of members with roles ranging from warriors to researchers, by the time that Immortals of Aveum begins the once-powerful force has seen its numbers drastically thinned by the ongoing Everwar. Playing as fledgling Immortal Jak, gamers will learn more about the order and its sometimes-dubious past as they make their way through Immortals of Aveum.

The Warriors of the Order of Immortals Are Just The Latest in a Long Lineage

By the time that Jak joins the Immortals, the order has been engaged in Aveum’s Everwar for over a millennium. A brutal war of ever-shifting alliances waged by countless generations who’ve fought and died in the name of Aveum’s five kingdoms, at the start of Immortals of Aveum the two main players in the conflict are Lucium and Rasharn. After defending Lucium against numerous threats across the centuries, the Order of Immortals now faces their toughest challenge yet as they take on Sandrakk and the armies of Rasharn.

A rare Triarch Magus capable of controlling all three colors of Aveum’s magic, protagonist Jak is recruited into the Immortals after an attack on his home by the forces of Sandrakk. The attack causes Jak’s powers as an Unforeseen to unexpectedly and explosively reveal themselves, leading General Kirkan to eye him as a potential weapon in her battle against Sandrakk. With the bulk of Lucium’s army made up of the Lightless, individuals with little to no magical abilities, adding an Unforeseen to its arsenal gives the Order of Immortals a much-needed boost in firepower.

The Immortals Are Lucium’s Last Line of Defense and Its Enforcers of Social Order

The Immortals gathered on the Palathon - Immortals of Aveum

Rather than wearing robes and waving wands at their opponents like in traditional fantasy games, the Order of Immortals behaves more like an elite special forces unit when they’re on the battlefield. Capable of dispensing devastating blasts of mystical energy using Immortals of Aveum’s magical sigils, the game’s fantasy take on traditional FPS firearms, the Immortals can take on overwhelming odds that would leave standard Lightless soldiers running for the hills. But even though it’s how players will spend most of their time as an Immortal, winning battles isn’t the only thing the order is concerned with.

When not using spells or ancient artifacts like Immortals of Aveum’s Colossals to take on the forces of Sandrakk, the Order of Immortals is also charged with maintaining the rigid social structure of the kingdom of Lucium. The majority of the order’s members, who are viewed with an almost religious reverence by the Lightless, come from the great houses of Lucium in a system reminiscent of medieval feudalism in the real world. In the eyes of Lucium’s elite, maintaining this social hierarchy by ensuring that noble lineages continue producing magical offspring is seen as one of the Order of Immortals’ most important tasks.

By bringing together the worlds of fantasy and FPS games, Immortals of Aveum manages to deliver a unique spin on some familiar ingredients. And with their blend of spell-slinging know-how and special forces tactics, the game’s titular Order of Immortals is one of its undisputed highlights.

Immortals of Aveum is available for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
