Ascendant and Electronic Arts shared a new gameplay trailer for Immortals of Aveum featuring some incredible-looking set pieces from the upcoming fantasy shooter. The footage premiered at the opening showcase of Summer Game Fest 2023, which also saw the long-awaited reveal of the Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth release date, among many other high-profile announcements.Developed by California-based Ascendant Studios, Immortals of Aveum was announced in December 2022 as a magic-based FPS from industry veterans who worked on hit series such as BioShock, Halo, and Call of Duty. The game is an entirely single-player experience that aims to deliver a "cinematic campaign," as per its original announcement.While Ascendant and EA shared plenty of new footage and even allowed limited hands-on previews of Immortals of Aveum since the turn of the year, none of the previously seen materials lean into that original promise of a cinematic experience as well the game's SGF 2023 trailer does. The three-minute clip mostly consists of action-packed gameplay sections taking place on, in, and around a 400-foot Colossal. This imposing piece of engineering is an integral part of the game's elaborate lore, which describes it as a destructive and "heavily regulated" piece of ancient war machinery used for both transport and battle.
The SGF 2023 trailer was first presented on stage by Darren Barnet, who leads Immortals of Aveum's star-studded cast as Jak, a mage looking to save the titular planet of Aveum from certain destruction. Doing so won't be a pacifist affair, with the newly shared footage showing Jak wreaking carnage on dozens of enemy troops using a wide variety of abilities.
While the developers previously described Immortals of Aveum as a mixture of everything from Doom and BioShock to Call of Duty and God of War, this newly debuted trailer also appears to be evocative of some memorable moments from the Dishonored series. Much like Arkane Studios' franchise, Immortals of Aveum is a single-player experience set in a fantasy world that largely plays like an FPS, but is actually an action RPG.
Early previews of the game already revealed a sizable skill tree that supports plenty of playing styles and has positive implications for its overall replay value. Those interested in a more one-off experience should still find Immortals of Aveum to offer good value for money, as the developers recently estimated that a single campaign playthrough will take around 25 hours. That figure puts it in the upper echelon of story-driven AAA games in terms of length, placing it on par with titles such as The Last of Us Part 2 and Hogwarts Legacy.
Immortals of Aveum launches July 20 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
