Immortals Fenyx Rising is perhaps one of the most popular Ubisoft games to come out in recent years, not related to one of its domineering franchises. It did grow out of an idea for Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, but it seems to have gone a lot smoother than Skull and Bones, which grew out of AC: Black Flag. Because of this, it’s no surprise that Ubisoft is seeking to make it a franchise with a new entry.

However, one insider—Jeff Grubb—who revealed that this game was in the works said it was more of a spin-off than a sequel. It sounds more akin to an anthological entry than a sequel. That’s because it may feature a different title, as Fenyx is not the character, and it is reportedly moving away from its Greek/Chinese mythology. Grubb said it may not release until 2025 at least, as it is early in development and he has only seen concept art for it, but this Immortals franchise entry supposedly features Polynesian mythology.

While there are a ton of mythologies that could be in an Immortals Fenyx Rising sequel, Polynesian is a perfect choice. It’s not as popular as others like Greek or Norse mythology, giving it a unique setting, and Grubb also says it is trying to break away from the Breath of the Wild comparisons. Visually it will be similar, but Ubisoft seems to be experimenting mechanically. Either way, this opens up a ton of new mythology that could be playfully explored.

However, again, Polynesia mythology does not appear as often in popular media like Norse or Greek. For those curious, here are a few quick details about the various Gods players could potentially meet in the new Immortals Fenyx Rising game (as Grubb does confirm there is another God narrator).

Immortals Fenyx Rising Sequel – Polynesian Deities and Myths

The most prominent deities are:

  • Kane – God of creation and sky. Having made the other gods, he operates as their overseer. He is most comparable to Zeus in Immortals Fenyx Rising.
  • Ku – a Polynesian God of War. He is associated with tribal warfare, but also as a patron for warriors and healers. He is a God of War, but one with a softer side.
  • Lono – Not so much the opposite of a God of War in terms of Ku’s soft side, but a contrasting deity is Lono—God of Peace, Rain, and Fertility.
  • Kanaloa – The god of darkness and death, associated with the dark depths of the ocean.

There are also some Polynesian cultures that worship supreme beings from which the gods descended, as well as spirits who split into gods, the Earth Mother (Papa), or the Sky Father (Wakea).

Other notable mythology/deities include

  • Laka – Laka (or Rata, Lata, Ata, or Lasa) is the name of two different heroes in Polynesian mythology. The kings of Tahiti and Hawaii would claim them as ancestors. Because of the duality here, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Laka was a replacement for Immortals Fenyx Rising’s protagonist.
  • Haumea -Mother of many gods, Haumea is the goddess of fertility and childbirth. She was killed by Kaulu.
  • Kaulu – A likely figure in a Polynesian setting is Kaula, a trickster god powerful physically and with magic. Kaulu has had numerous adventures, according to Hawaiian mythology.
  • Pele – Creator of the Hawaiian Islands, she is often known as Madame Pele, goddess of volcanoes and fire. Her influence on ancient Hawaii cannot be understated, and she is said to have been born from Haumea.
  • Papatuanuku: Often depicted asleep, “Papa” is the Goddess of the Earth. She sees to the land believed to give birth to all things and looks over the children of nature and humanity.
  • Tawhirimatea – This god of weather is often depicted riding a cloud and is often depicted as the angry child of Papa. There are many children of Papa who would be great in a Polynesian setting, as many of them express emotions through natural disasters.

Immortals Fenyx Rising’s Polynesian Setting has a Ton of Potential

This is only a small taste of the various mythologies a Polynesian-set game could dive into. What’s perhaps most interesting is that there is a category of spirit or deity known as Aumaku, who are guardian spirits that protect certain families. This could translate well to gameplay and combat with animal deities used as styles of attack, while object-based Aumaku could aid with Immortals Fenyx Rising's puzzles and exploration.

While it remains to be seen what the final project looks like and these are just rumors for now, it’s hard not to see how this could be a great follow-up to Immortals Fenyx Rising.

An Immortals Fenyx Rising sequel is reportedly in development.
