The latest addition to the studio's iconic Musou franchise, Koei Tecmo and Omega Force's Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity dropped last year, offering an action-packed prequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild that set up the apocalyptic events of the revered game. Recently, Koei Tecmo revealed that Age of Calamity has managed to do exceptionally well for the company, confirming via a fiscal earnings report that it's sold over 3.7 million units.

The news comes shortly after the game's previous record-breaking milestone in January, where it was announced that the title had become the best-selling iteration of the Musou series to date, beating out staples like Dynasty Warriors 9 and its predecessor, Hyrule Warriors. Back then, the game sold 3.5 million units, showing that it's continuing to shift copies months after its Nintendo Switch debut.

Outside of Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, the financial report revealed that Koei Tecmo's other titles continue to thrive as well. It'll be interesting to see whether it delves further into partnerships going forward, especially with its latest collaboration with Nintendo offering huge returns. However, Age of Calamity still has a spate of post-launch content to get to first, with a new expansion pass set to bring fresh characters and all-new weapons to the popular action title.

For those who didn't play Age of Calamity, it takes place 100 years before the beginning of Breath of the Wild, as Link, Zelda, and The Champions of Hyrule band together to fight back against Ganon's forces. In classic Musou style, the game's action is exaggerated and high-octane, seeing players take on waves of enemy forces by using an array of characters. Reviews pegged it as a fun insight into the events that led to Hyrule's downfall, combining Koei Tecmo's historic genre and Breath of the Wild's intriguing world in a way that enriched both.

It was the latest in a long line of team-ups for Koei Tecmo, who has taken the Musou genre to several iconic settings over the years. Fire Emblem got the nod back in 2017 through Fire Emblem Warriors, while One-Piece got an adaptation via One Piece: Pirate Warriors. More recently, Persona 5 Strikers brought the genre to Atlus' JRPG behemoth, seeing Joker and the Phantom Thieves ditch turn-based battles for real-time combat. The success of Age of Calamity makes plenty clear that these crossover projects are a worthwhile endeavour for the company, which continues to find success with its 1 vs 100 style of gameplay.
