Nintendo's amiibo line caught on with fans looking for cute figures of some of Nintendo's most iconic characters. That these figures came with the added bonus of in-game functionality was a big plus. The company has been producing new amiibo for major franchises since they launched in 2014, with the latest Smash Bros. amiibo arriving in 2021. Soon, players will get to use their amiibo in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity.

Breath of the Wild established a material foraging & crafting system that gave players a lot of potential recipes to uncover. Learning how to make a fruitcake, and seeing Link drool at the sight of the completed confection is rewarding for players to discover. Hyrule Warriors looks to enhance this system by retaining key elements, tailoring it to the musou-style gameplay, and tying it to side quests for Link. The material system looks to be important, which is why amiibo usage could help out.

In Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity it appears that tapping in an amiibo will net players a random item, weapon, or a small amount of currency. In some cases, players will receive materials for tapping an amiibo in, which is definitely useful for crafting. There is a limit of 5 amiibo uses per day and it is unclear at this time if specific items are tied to specific amiibo. This kind of functionality is more or less what was found in the first Hyrule Warriors game. Also carrying over from the first game will be the ability to play as multiple characters, info that was datamined out of the Age of Calamity demo.

After hitting the limit of 5 daily amiibo scans, the message "you can't receive more rewards from amiibo accessories today" appears. While limiting scans might annoy some players, putting in a limit prevents players from abusing the system. Recently released gameplay footage of Hyrule Warriors doesn't reveal any additional info on amiibo usage, but does show off a new villain supposedly from the Yiga Clan.

While amiibo functionality is unavailable in the demo, fans seem to have been enjoying the experience. One thing that players have noticed about the demo, however, is the low frame rate in Age of Calamity. Nintendo is aiming for 30 fps for Age of Calamity - a number the game has had a little difficulty maintaining at times in the demo.

Fans invested in the world of Breath of the Wild need only wait a little longer to pick up this Musou offshoot of the series. And now players know their amiibo collection will get a little workout too.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity lands on Nintendo Switch on November 20th.
