Digital Cybercherries, the independent British developer behind the co-op shooter Hypercharge: Unboxed, has announced that the game will get cross-platform support soon. With Hypercharge set to release on Xbox consoles in a few days, this important new feature will likely be of great use to fans of the hit indie game and is a step towards ensuring the title's longevity by maintaining an active playerbase.

Having initially debuted as part of Steam's early access program in 2017, Hypercharge: Unboxed has been on the indie scene for quite a while. The game, which puts players in the perspective of small action figures and pits them against waves of toy enemies in bedrooms, garages, and other ordinary environments, received its first full release on Nintendo Switch in January 2020. The 1.0 version of Hypercharge launched on PC shortly thereafter in April of that year. Digital Cybercherries' hybrid first-person/third-person co-op shooter was met with largely positive reviews from critics and gamers upon release, but there was one missing feature that some fans had hoped would make its way into the game at launch. Luckily, though, it seems like this particular feature is finally making its way into the game after several years.

In a post on the Steam Community forums, Digital Cybercherries revealed that Hypercharge: Unboxed will receive cross-platform support between Steam and Xbox players on May 31, 2024. This coincides with the release of the co-op shooter's upcoming port to Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S, which launches on the same day. Digital Cybercherries celebrated the news in the official announcement post, stating that, whether players "are on Xbox or PC, [they] can join forces to protect the Hypercores."

Hypercharge is Getting Cross-Platform Support on Xbox/PC, But Switch Players Will Have to Wait

Unfortunately, Nintendo Switch fans will have to wait a little bit longer to play the co-op game with friends on other platforms. One of the developers behind Hypercharge: Unboxed revealed in a discussion thread on Steam that there is "no ETA" just yet as to when the Switch version "will receive crossplay and all other major updates to bring it on par" with the PC release of the game. Nintendo players will eventually get to play with Xbox and PC gamers, but not in the immediate future. As for PlayStation gamers, they can expect cross-play as well when the game eventually launches on PS4 and PS5 as Digital Cybercherries confirmed, though there is no release window for those versions of the game.

Digital Cybercherries' popular indie game will likely receive an influx of new players when it releases on other platforms over the coming months. As such, there's never been a better time for the developer to add cross-platform support to the title, even though the game's PlayStation version isn't coming out soon. Nonetheless, when Hypercharge: Unboxed launches on Microsoft's consoles at the end of May 2024, it will join the ever-growing list of great co-op shooters on Xbox Series X/S.
