Ubisoft’s Hyper Scape is getting new content. The developer just released a new trailer announcing Season 3 of the free-to-play battle royal FPS. The two-minute trailer debuted Thursday and teased big shake-ups in the world of Hyper Scape. Whether or not it is enough to reignite gamers’ interest is another matter entirely.

The trailer opens with masked player character Basilisk ascending a crystalline tower promising it will give up its secrets. The next shot shows the playable character and in-universe reporter Nahari reporting on the structure’s appearance. During her report, the game’s new Crown Rush season begins, but the match is interrupted when corporate goons drag off one of the players. The final scene returns to Basilisk as an ominous voice promises him power and glory in exchange for recovering its “lost shards.”

The trailer showed off a few new items players will have access to. This included a shield and a new weapon that looks like it deals some pretty heavy area of effect damage. Nahari also mentioned the mysterious emergence of new hacks, special abilities that players can activate to control the battlefield. Unfortunately, the trailer didn’t offer much of a look at any hack in particular. Meanwhile, the “hacked” version of Basilisk looks like it could be a new skin, and the collecting shards may point to new game modes.

Hyper Scape takes place in 2054 in Neo-Arcadia, a virtual world similar to the setting of Ready Player One. The game’s unique feature is Ubisoft’s attempt to intergrade streaming into the outcome of matches. The game’s AI can modify the game world, such as changing gravity or giving players infinite ammo. Viewers on Twitch can vote on which rule change happens next.

Unfortunately, Hyper Scape hasn’t quite lived up to the high expectations and player numbers are way down from when the game was in beta. Ubisoft has promised major overhauls as active development continues, and Season 3 could be the next step in making that happen.

Hyper Scape is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
