Hunter x Hunter is one of the most successful Shounen series to date, celebrated worldwide for its intricate world building and unparalleled character arcs. Fans eagerly await its continuation, but unfortunately, mangaka Yoshihiro Togashi has suffered many health issues and the publication schedule of Hunter x Hunter has been greatly affected, to the point that only ten chapters have been released in the past five years. Even if it is confirmed he is working on more, it is uncertain when and even if they will be released, given how much he struggles to draw.

This is why Togashi has recently revealed a possible ending of the series to a Japanese TV show, to be considered canon if he ends up dying before managing to conclude his masterpiece. Of course, this is not to say that he will abandon the series, and he has gone so far as to state that he has another three possible endings in mind. However, he recognizes he may not be able to do so, and the revealed ending is a necessary contingency plan to not leave fans hanging in the event of him coming to pass.

How Does Hunter x Hunter End?

Whale Island Hunter x Hunter

The revealed Hunter x Hunter ending focuses on Jin, the non-canon granddaughter of Gon. It starts with her near a lake, holding a fishing rod and standing still. Suddenly, the line jerks violently, and Jin, startled, exclaims, "I've caught it! I've caught the Lord of the Lake!". This mimics the beginning of the Hunter x Hunter series, with Gon accomplishing the same feat to obtain permission to leave Whale Island, but Jin is revealed to have opposite intentions. In fact, she approaches her mother and declares that, since she has now caught the fish, she can stay and doesn’t have to take off to become a Hunter.

After this, the scene shifts to a shop and, while working, Jin thinks to herself that her mother will never understand. She has noticed that whenever her grandfather Gon joyfully recalls his Hunter days, grandmother Noko silently walks away, and she finds his distance and frequent leaving to be sad. Suddenly, a chubby child with a plant enters, proclaiming he too has caught the Lord of the Lake to honor Wale Island. Jin replies happily, stating that she always wants to be with her loved ones, and the child agrees. The last scene is of a bird flying from the island, over a city, and towards the horizon, with a figure watching the scene in the background.

Who is Gon’s Grandaughter Jin?Gon Freecss smiling in the forest

In the revealed Hunter x Hunter ending, Jin appears to be the granddaughter of Gon Freecs and Noko, the only other child who grew up on Whale Island with him. She is depicted as a determined and independent young girl who lives on the island with her parents, and, unlike her grandfather, she seems to have a strong connection to her family and place of birth. Despite her being physically capable, she carries on Mito’s and Noko’s legacy, and she openly states her desire to remain on the Island. In doing so, she chooses to disregard her mother’s wishes for her to follow in Ging and Gon’s footsteps, and instead chooses her own path.

Just like Gon, she captures the "Lord of the Lake," proving her skills and determination to her mother. This shows that if she wanted to be a Hunter, she would almost certainly be skilled enough to manage, but as she places more value on family ties, she has no interest. Since she sees her grandmother Noko has been greatly affected by Gon’s constant leaving, she insists on not following his path, and instead want to remain close to those she cares about and avoid the heartbreak.

This narrative proposes a reinterpretation of the Hunter x Hunter themes that places the value of family above that of adventure. In this new generation, there is a break from the Freecs legacy that brings the story full circle, and since Jin chose to remain, it is unlikely her children will choose to leave, as the quest to find his father is what initially led Gon to depart himself.

Hunter x Hunter is now available to stream on Prime Video.
