The Hunter X Hunter story is currently in its Succession Contest arc, having started with chapter 349, and looking to continue for quite a while longer once Hunter x Hunter returns from its hiatus. Yoshihiro Togashi was back with his story just a few months ago and offered the fans 10 chapters to the story, spanning from chapter 391 to chapter 400.
These chapters, alongside the many before it that spanned over the Succession Contest and the Dark Continent Expedition arc, introduced many new nen abilities to the fans. At the same time, they also expanded on some older characters’ abilities. With no sign of this arc getting wrapped soon, Togashi will, perhaps, showcase more abilities. Regardless, the readers have been exposed to many new nen abilities, some better than the others.
5 Saiyu - Three Monkeys
Saiyu is one of the 12 Zodiacs, the Monkey, to be specific, and acts as a Blacklist Hunter. In this stage of the story, he is currently on the Defense Team that’s on its way to the Dark Continent on the Black Whale. Saiyu is Beyond’s only supporter, which made him a target for Kurapika to try and arrest.
Using his Dowsing Chain, Kurapika was able to determine that Saiyu revealed the truth about his nen ability – Three Monkeys. The type of this nen ability is currently unknown but it allows Saiyu to deprive his opponent of sight, hearing, or speech. This ability and his Priest staff make him a fearsome enemy capable of taking away 3 senses and destabilizing his enemies.
4 Zakuro Custard - Bloody Mary
Zakuro Custard is a member of the Xi-Yu mafia family – one of the three major mafia families in the Kakin Empire. Working under Hinrigh Biganduffno and alongside Lynch - he played an important role in tracking down Hisoka’s location in the recent Hunter x Hunter chapters.
His nen ability, Bloody Mary, is from the Manipulation class. This ability allows him to freely control his own blood but he needs an open wound for it to work and let the blood flow out. He can use his blood to restrict the movements of other people and can, seemingly, even bring blood droplets to life to search around if needed.
3 Lynch Fullbokko - Body and Soul
Another member of the Xi-Yu family, Lynch is one of Hinrigh Biganduffno’s most trusted underlings. She’s typically seen with Zakuro Custard as they undertake missions together. Their most important mission was to find Hisoka’s whereabouts in the recent chapters of the manga. While they did manage to find him, they were no match for Hisoka’s power, yet made it out in one piece.
Her nen ability, Body and Soul, doesn’t have a confirmed nen type but could possibly be Emission. Her ability is very interesting as it allows her to force answers out of people. She starts by asking a question to someone, and then proceeds to punch them which leads to the person giving a truthful answer that only she and the person in question can hear.
2 Chrollo Lucilfer - The Sun and Moon
Chrollo Lucilfer is the head of the Spider and a character that received the spotlight during the most recent chapters of Hunter x Hunter. These chapters showed his backstory in Meteor City, alongside the other Spiders, and the events that eventually led to the formation of the Phantom Troupe. He is one of the most memorable characters in the story and definitely a force to be reckoned with, thanks to his Skill Hunter ability.
An ability he stole, The Sun and Moon, is one of the most powerful nen he has showcased so far. The type of this ability is unknown but it could possibly be Specialization. The Sun and Moon grants him the mark of a sun on one hand and a moon on the other. Using this, he leaves a mark on an individual and when the two symbols connect, it creates an explosion the power of which depends on the length of time he maintains contact with them.
1 Hinrigh Biganduffno - Biohazard
Hinrigh Biganduffno is the underboss of the Xi-Yu mafia family, making him one of the strongest individuals belonging to the mafia. His character was given a lot of focus recently as he and a few Phantom Troupe members teamed up to find Morena’s base and eliminate Heil-ly. Time and again, he proved his usefulness to the readers and even earned Nobunaga’s respect.
His nen ability is Bio Hazard, and it is possibly one of the most interesting abilities in the series. This ability belongs to the Conjuration type and it allows him to turn any object into an animal. The animal, however, conserves the functions of the initial object. Fans have m seen him do this on multiple occasions, one being when he turned a camera into a cat to keep an area under surveillance while he was gone, and another when he turned a homing device into an Oyster to help bust the location of Heil-ly’s base.
