Much of the world has been coming together to support Ukraine in the midst of an invasion by Russia. Various players in the gaming industry have suspended sales to Russia and donated large sums of money to humanitarian relief efforts. Most recently, Epic Games announced that it would be donating all of its Fortnite earnings from March 20 to April 3. Humble Bundle is also getting involved via its "Stand with Ukraine" Bundle.
Humble Bundle sells curated bundles of video games, eBooks, software, and other digital content to raise money for charity, and the Stand with Ukraine bundle may just be its biggest yet. For as little as $40, players can gain access to 123 Steam keys, eBooks, game design lessons, and 3D printable models. Every cent that is raised through this bundle will go to Ukraine humanitarian relief efforts, and the bundle has already raised over $8 million USD. Anyone who is interested has a limited time to claim the bundle, and they will gain access to some heavy hitting titles while supporting Ukraine.
Back 4 Blood
One of the bigger titles in this bundle is the spiritual successor to Left 4 Dead, aptly titled Back 4 Blood. Created by Turtle Rock Studios, Back 4 Blood brings players to a zombie-infested world where they must cooperatively fight back against hordes. Players can either fight their way through a campaign offline or online, or they can compete against each other in PvP multiplayer. The game also touts a rogue-lite card system that ensures no two playthroughs are alike, and a game director that reacts to everything the player does so it can keep them on their toes.
Metro Exodus
Metro Exodus takes place a quarter-century after nuclear war devastated the planet. Players are given control of Artyom as he ventures across post-apocalyptic Russia in search of a better life in the East. It is described as an epic, story-driven first-person shooter where players have to fight for survival while exploring this destroyed planet. It is inspired by the novels of Dmitry Glukhovsky, and is the third title in the Metro series.
Sunset Overdrive
Before Insomniac Games was purchased by PlayStation, it created Sunset Overdrive alongside Xbox Game Studios. Sunset Overdrive served as a launch title for Xbox One, introducing players to a wild and colorful world. An energy drink has contaminated the population and turned many into toxic mutants. Utilizing a thrilling movement system, the player is tasked with surviving in Sunset City and making it their own personal playground while trying to figure out how to stop the mutants.
Spyro Reignited Trilogy
In 1998, Insomniac Games released Spyro the Dragon for Playstation, and the purple dragon instantly became a fan favorite. It went on to make two more titles in the series before Insomniac moved on to Ratchet & Clank. In 2018, Toys for Bob remastered the three original Insomniac titles and released them as the Spyro Reignited Trilogy. Once again fans of the series can play through these exciting platformers, serving as a perfect jumping off point for those who have never played a Spyro game.
This War of Mine
Created by 11 Bit Studios, This War of Mine is a game about war unlike any other. Instead of putting players in control of soldiers, it puts them in control of civilians trying to survive in a besieged city. This War of Mine has multiple endings depending upon the choices that are made, and it received three post-launch story DLC expansions. It provides a unique look into wartime that not many forms of media have tried, and for that it received immense praise. The developers also spent a week donating all the proceeds from the game to Ukraine humanitarian relief efforts, raising $850,000.
Kerbal Space program
Kerbal Space Program is the perfect game for anyone who wants to run their own take on NASA. Developed by Squad, Kerbal Space Program gives players full control of a space program whose mission is to travel the stars. The game features a realistic physics engine that allows for real-world space flight maneuvers. It can prove to be very difficult as players have to dedicate some time to learning the ins and outs of space travel. Various agencies like NASA even took interest in the game for its deep simulation, and as a sequel nears release it is the perfect time to jump into the original.
Pathfinder Second Edition Core Rulebook
Humble Bundle has also included a couple of eBooks for people to enjoy with its Ukraine support bundle. The 640-page Pathfinder Second Edition Core Rulebook contains everything someone would need to know before they played Pathfinder, from rules to character customization. It is a great tool that may just start a long tabletop adventure.
RPG Maker 115
Along with video games and eBooks, the Stand with Ukraine bundle also contains game-making tools. RPG Maker 15 allows users to create their own RPGs in the style of old-school Final Fantasy or Fire Emblem. It is a fairly easy program to pick up, but one that can prove difficult to master. It is a great tool for those who may just want to play around with creating games, or those who want to craft an intriguing RPG for others to check out.
