Humble is shaking up its pricing structures and delivery methods. In a recent announcement, the company detailed changes to the cost and benefits of its Humble Choice membership. Humble will also be introducing the Humble app, a new game launcher, which will give members access to the Humble Games Collection.
The Humble Bundle was conceived by Wolfire Games’ Jeffery Rosen, first launching in 2010. The project let gamers purchase game bundles using a pay-what-you-want model, with a portion of the proceeds going to charity. It quickly found success, offering good value to consumers while also benefitting game developers with quick, high-volume sales. The company was acquired by IGN Entertainment in 2017, and has gone through many changes over the years, offering various subscription models, game packages, and other digital content through its storefront. Since 2010, Humble claims that $200,000,000 has been contributed to charity through its platform.
The Humble Choice bundle originally allowed gamers to pick from a selection of curated games each month. Humble Choice was also offered in different tiers, but it will now be simplified to one plan, offered at a flat rate of $12 a month. The range of curated games may vary each month, but Humble is promising $171 worth of games in January alone. Subscribers will also be given the complete list of games offered each month and will no longer have to pick which ones to keep. Humble claims it listened to community feedback and is introducing the changes to give consumers better value.
Humble will also be introducing the Humble app, a game launcher designed for PC. It will allow members to access the Humble Games Collection, a library of curated games. The collection will arrive in February, starting with several titles: Forager, Wizard of Legend, Dodgeball Academia, Unsighted, and Void Bastards. Games offered through the main Humble Choice bundle will still be delivered as game keys for other launchers, so this app is not intended as its main game delivery system, at least for now. According to Humble, access to the Humble Games Collection is lost if subscribers skip a month or cancel their membership. Likewise, the 20% discount on the storefront given to members is also reset if a month's payment is skipped.
Those who already have a Humble Choice membership will automatically be moved over to the new subscription model, regardless of the plan they are currently on. Customers will surely be happy about the increased value offered in the revised Humble Choice package, although an extra game launcher might not please everyone. Fans will have to wait and see how the Humble app stacks up compared to other game launchers, but with Steam, Epic, Origin, GOG Galaxy, and the Bethesda launcher, among others, the space is feeling a little crowded.
The Humble app will be available in February 2022.
