Fortnite fans had been eagerly waiting for the Chapter 5 Season 2 update to drop, but things went south right around the release of the update.

While Fortnite downtimes usually last around 4-5 hours, this one turned out to be a nightmare for the community. The game has been down for over 12 hours, and players are still unable to get in. Amid that, many players are facing a strange issue in which the game is asking them to restart to access the new update. For players wondering how they can restart Fortnite, here is all they need to know.

'Restart Fortnite To Download The Latest Patch' Error Explained

restart fortnite to download patch error

Due to the new update for Chapter 5, Season 2, players will need to download the latest patch to be able to play the game. However, if they are inside the game, the patch will not get installed, which will prevent them from signing in. To fix that, the game needs to be restarted. And while that may sound quite trivial, it may be a bit tricky since, at times, consoles don't properly quit the game, and it keeps running in the background. Here is how to do it properly instead.

How To Restart Fortnite On PS5 & PS4

To restart Fortnite on PlayStation 5 & PlayStation 4, players can follow the given steps:

  • Press and hold the PS button on the controller.
  • On the PlayStation 4, press the Close Application button
  • On the PlayStation 5, press the Options button and then select Close Game.
  • Once that's done, players can simply open Fortnite again to access it.
  • Alternatively, players can also shut down their consoles. Do note that putting into Rest Mode is not equivalent to shutting down the console.

How To Restart Fortnite On Xbox One & Series S/X

On Xbox, the process is pretty straightforward.

  • Press the Xbox button and then navigate to the Home screen.
  • Select Fortnite and then press the Menu button
  • Press Quit to close Fortnite
  • Start Fortnite again

How To Restart Fortnite On PC

On PC, if players head to the menu and quit the game, Fortnite closes for good. However, if players aren't sure, then restarting their PC is a good idea as well. Alternatively, players can also restart the Epic Games Launcher to make sure that the update is reflected on the launcher as well and not bugged.

If players still don't see the update after these steps, then probably waiting for a while for downtime to end is the best bet.
