For those who aren't in the know, The Last of Us Part 1 is a remake of one of the best cinematic experiences on the PS3 and PS4. Even though the game is a scene-for-scene faithful adaptation, the visuals are updated to make it more in line with The Last of Part 2. In addition to better graphics, The Last of Us Part 1 features 3D audio, adaptive triggers, haptic feedback, and other immersive DualSense vibrations.

As stated, The Last of Us Part 1 is fundamentally the same experience as the original game. So a straight playthrough of the campaign should take around 15-16 hours on the Normal/Moderate setting. The standalone Left Behind DLC that serves as a prequel to the main story should take approximately 3-4 hours.

However, playing on the higher difficulty levels can change the time it takes to beat it. The Last of Us Part 1 remake introduces several improvements. Including better artificial intelligence that extends to the protagonist's companions and the enemies they encounter.

Fighting enemies with high-difficulty settings means they use more advanced techniques to flush out Joel and Ellie. Moreover, they will need to use stealth takedowns more frequently. Using the silent approach changes the dynamic of the action from a straight-up third-person shooter to a cerebral stealth game that requires time and patience.

The Last Of Us Part 1's Difficulty Settings

The Last of Us Part I Joel and Ellie

The Last of Us Part 1 is a linear experience, but changing the difficulty mode will significantly change the mechanics and length of the game. The game has six default difficulty settings.

The first three difficulty modes range from Very Light, Light, to Moderate. These settings can take the average player up to 16-20 hours to complete the campaign and Left Behind.

However, the Hard, Survivor, and Grounded modes significantly change the dynamics. Resources are more limited as the difficulty increases, and enemies are more challenging.

Survivor mode makes resources even more scarce and switches off Listen Mode mechanic.

Finally, the Grounded setting aims to be the most realistic and intense version of The Last of Us Part 1. In addition to switching off the Listen Mode, the HUD is switched off with altered gameplay elements to increase the challenge.
