In the improved ARK: Survival Ascended, the Argentavis is a bird that many players prefer to use as a flying mount. Not only is it a predator who is very powerful, but it is also a great creature to have to travel around more easily. However, taming this beast is one of the more difficult things to do.
Although this bird is quite troublesome to tame, there is one method that will make it a breeze to catch, even for beginners: setting up a trap. The resources needed to create this will be quite easy to obtain and will guarantee your chances of catching the Argentavis.

When it comes to cold biomes in ARK: Survival Ascended, wearing armor that offers the game's best cold protection is one of the only ways to survive.
Where to Find Argentavis
Before you can begin building a trap for the Argentavis, you'll first need to locate where the beast can frequently be found. The creature is often seen around the northern hills and cold areas on The Island map, such as:
- Found near the large volcano in the redwood biome, found in the center of the map, and near the Blue Obelisk
- Found near another volcano north of the redwood biome one
- Found in the snowy mountains in the northwest
To find an Argentavis on the Scorched Earth map, here's where to look:
- Mountains near the Blue Obelisk (northwest)
- Mountains near the Red Obelisk (southwest)
- In the center of the map, near the main river
When coming across an Argentavis in one of these areas, you'll obviously want to first build your trap before approaching them. Once you have built the trap, however, you can just bring them to it by getting their attention and leading them towards the trap. Due to their aggressive nature, they will follow close behind you all the way to your trap.

Best Argentavis Trap in ARK: Survival Ascended
Now that you're aware of where you can find an Argentavis to tame, you'll need to build yourself a simple trap to catch the giant bird that requires materials even beginners can scrounge up. To start, you'll need to gather all the following items:
- 1x Stone Foundation
- Stone x80
- Wood x40
- Thatch x30
- 3x Stone Ramps
- Stone x180
- Wood x90
- Thatch x60
- 6x Stone Walls
- Stone x240
- Wood x120
- Thatch x90
Start by placing a Stone Foundation on the ground. You'll want to lower it as close to the ground as possible so it's easy for your character to run across it. Then, whip out one of your roofs and switch it over to a Stone Ramp. Place the Stone Ramp vertically going up away from you. Then, add another ramp going up, directly attached to the previous one.
Now, in between the two Stone Ramps, scroll to Stone Wall and choose Stone Double Doorway. Place it here, and then put two additional Stone Double Doorways on the left side of the ground and then two more on the right side.
Then, go back to the Stone Roof and choose a Stone Ramp. Place it in between the two Stone Double Doorways in the middle, with the ramp going upwards towards you. Finally, at the very front of the trap, place a Stone Short Doorway from the Stone Wall, which is where your character will enter.
Finally, after completing the trap, approach a nearby Argentavis to get it aggravated, prompting it to want to attack you and follow you. Then, run to the trap, enter through the doorway, and stop at the top of the ramp. Wait until the Argentavis is successfully stuck inside. Then, to tame it, use some tranquilizers in a weapon like a crossbow to knock it out. Give it some of the following food, whichever one you have available, and place it in the Argentavis' inventory:
- Superior Kibble
- Raw Mutton
- Raw Prime Meat
- Cooked Lamb Chop
- Cooked Prime Meat
- Raw Prime Fish Meat
Keep track of its taming progress, and once it is fully tamed, you can place an Argentavis Saddle on it. To get it out of the trap, after putting the saddle on, jump on and fly the bird to the top of the trap and then look down to wiggle the bird out. It might take a few tries, but as long as you keep pushing forward, the Argentavis will eventually break free.
