Dragons are a crucial part of House of the Dragon's storytelling, and the upcoming Season 2 is due to add 5 more to the mix. Vhagar, Sunfyre, Syrax, and Moondancer appear in House of the Dragon's Official Dueling Trailers; it's not a big secret that Vermithor, Seasmoke, and Meleys have roles to play in the upcoming war between kin.

House of the Dragon has been touting the idea of dragon warfare for quite a while now, and Season 2 lands the Greens and the Blacks' allies smack dab in the middle of dragon warfare. No matter how flamboyant, powerful, and assertive the show's characters are, they can never overshadow the most important dragons in the canon.

Most Targaryen dragons will perish in House of the Dragon, but who was the Last Dragon in lore?

Vhagar

Split image of Rhaenyra Targaryen and Vhagar in House of the Dragon Season 2 trailer.

Aemond Targaryen's dragon - Vhagar, will reappear in House of Dragon Season 2. The largest dragon in Westeros is ready to serve the Greens in the kin-strife. She and the Hightower host form the crux of the Greens' power and influence. The Hightower-Targaryen might also rest on Aegon II's so-called claim to the Iron Throne, the precedent of having male heirs, and the fact that the Greens have the Red Keep.

Vhagar is the last remnant of the trifecta of Targaryen power that imposed a political sword on most of Westeros. Her previous riders were Queen Visenya, Prince Baelon Targaryen, and Lady Laena Velaryon, and she fights for the Green camp currently. After devouring Prince Lucerys and Arrax in the fight above the Shipbreaker Bay, Vhagar will fight at Rook's Rest.

Sunfyre

Vhagar won't be the only Green dragon present at the Rook's Rest ambush but will be accompanied by the most beautiful dragon, i.e., Aegon II's Sunfyre. They will fight Princess Rhaenys atop Meleys.

Aegon II's Sunfyre battles Meleys a thousand feet in the air and loses half of his wing. He is unable to fly after the battle and is no longer the most beautiful dragon in the Seven Kingdoms. Sunfyre is the King's mount in the Dance and therefore one of the most important dragons in House of the Dragon season 2.

Meleys

Rhaenys and Meleys intimidate the Greens in House of the Dragon.

Princess Rhaenys and her mount, Meleys, bow out of the civil war early on because of the Battle at Rook's Rest. The Princess and her dragon put up a brave fight against the Greens' dragons, but are overpowered. While Meleys is no match for the gigantic Vhagar, she is remarkably agile and faster than her opponent.

As seen in House of the Dragon season 1, episode 9 "The Green Council," Meleys is roused in the Greens' Coup at King's Landing and comes close to killing Alicent's party inside the Dragonpit of King's Landing. Meleys will breathe fire at Rhaenys' command in House of the Dragon Season 2. She will tear half of Sunfyre's wing if the Battle at Rook's Rest is a loyal adaptation.

Caraxes

Caraxes and Daemon in House of the Dragon.

Prince Daemon's Caraxes, also known as the Blood Wyrm, is a scariest-looking creature, thanks to his unusually long neck. He inspires fear, just like his master.

Caraxes has a crucial role to play in the opening of the Dance, as Daemon will fly him to Kingspyre Tower of Harren's Castle in an event known as the Assault on Harrenhal. Daemon's act of war has the Strongs, led by Ser Simon, ceding Harrenhal to him, and Caraxes plays a pivotal role in that. Daemon threatens to burn the ill-omened castle just as his ancestor, Aegon the Conqueror, had done atop Balerion the Black Dread. Caraxes' biggest fight is with Daemon's mirror character, Aemond Targaryen, and his mount, Vhagar, but that takes place later in the lore.

Syrax

Rhaenyra about to mount Syrax in House of the Dragon Season 2 Official Black Trailer.

The Queen's mount, Syrax, is the most notable of all dragons. While she isn't the largest or the most dangerous flying beast in the Seven Kingdoms, she will take center stage in the Dance as the Queen rides her. So far, Syrax has made it to House of the Dragon's Official Black Trailer, and in lore, Rhaenyra flies her to take the capital city of King's Landing.

Queen Rhaenyra is Syrax's only known rider, as the dragon is killed in the aftermath of the Storming of the Dragonpit.

Vermax, Seasmoke, Vermithor And Silverwing

Seasmoke and Vermithor in House of the Dragon.

House of the Dragon - Season 2 will feature an epic naval and air battle in the Gullet region. It is fought between the Triarchy warships and the Black dragons. It takes place after Otto Hightower (representing the Greens) succeeds in brokering an alliance with the Triarchy, who launch war operations in the Gullet. The warships ambush the Gay Abandon cog that is carrying the Blacks' sons, Prince Aegon and Viserys, to Pentos.

Viserys is taken captive while Aegon escapes on Stormcloud and delivers the news to Dragonstone. The Blacks ready their dragons, namely, Vermax, Seasmoke, Vermithor, and Silverwing, and fly to the Gullet. Prince Jacaerys atop Vermax, Addam of Hull's Seasmoke, Vermithor on Hugh Hammer, and Ulf White on Silverwing descend upon the enemy and set fire to their galleys. The Blacks lose Jace and Vermax; Seasmoke, Vermithor, and Silverwing deal a blow to the enemy lines.

House of the Dragon Season 2 premieres June 16 at 9/8c on HBO and Max.
