However, even under their leadership, the realm is full of political intrigue and conflict, such as questions of ascendance, marriage, and countless wars that are born out of those. House Hightower is one of the major players in the show’s story. This house is known for ruling over Oldtown, the city where the Maesters’ citadel is located. This, along with Oldtown being the seat of the High Septon, makes House Hightower a powerful and influential player in the political games of Westeros.

He can be seen in King’s Landing as he attends court proceedings and pledges his loyalty to the King. However, he is soon revealed to be a political manipulator and a close ally to his brother, Otto. Both of them share a goal of gaining more political power and spreading their house’s influence to the Iron Throne. He is shown to be arrogant and decisive, but also careful when it comes to his operations, as he acts as an aid to his brother rather than an active political figure.

Hobert’s loyalty to his house is reaffirmed once he supports his niece, Alicent, when she chooses to represent her own house’s sigil in her dress instead of house Targaryen. Hobert was eager to empower her and help her son to sit on the Iron Throne, making Alicent a dangerous and influential contender. Hobert died after that occasion, and his only known son, Ormund, inherited his place as the Lord of Oldtown and the head of House Hightower.
